@cheersitskatie We need to normalize this

@HamletEJ @cheersitskatie Do you not consider "guys" to be gender neutral?

@Celestalon @cheersitskatie That’s entirely up to whether your listeners prefer to use/hear it that way. But that wasn’t really the point anyway, it’s the thought exercise of how “ladies” sounds, to people who aren’t used to hearing it.

@Celestalon @cheersitskatie (At least that’s what I read into it, she can correct me) And my gloss was: if we were less universally overrun by the toxic idea that being called feminine words is belittling/insulting, “hey girls” wouldn’t even a weird thing to say.

@HamletEJ @cheersitskatie I mean, it does matter, right? If you/group consider 'guys'/'dude' to be masculine, then this is intentionally misgendering people in order to bring awareness to how often people are misgendered in the other direction. If you consider them neutral, it's... just misgendering?

@Celestalon @cheersitskatie “Misgendering” feels reductive here, for reasons I want to try to come back to when I can think/type more. But in any case, there are lot of people who won’t take it as neutral (I said it kind of open-endedly, but people in replies are making clear they don’t).

@HamletEJ @cheersitskatie (For those that don't know me, I'm very much on the progressive end of these conversations. I'm just waxing about the direction of language.) My personal impression is that 'dudes' has progressed to be widespread neutral, and 'guys' is headed that direction, but isn't there yet.

@HamletEJ @cheersitskatie And of course, that skews one way or another based on the group/context. Love hearing others' impressions, and understand that it varies a ton especially by culture/geography. I can definitely accept that we're not there yet, but look forward to the day that we are.
