Hey all, I just got asked a good Mercs question that I wanted to share more widely: Q: "If I get the Diablo Pre-Purchase Mercs Bundle, can I then still open the regular, basic Diablo in my packs?" A: "Yes, but it won't take away from your guaranteed* merc in each pack."

Now, to explain, because the info is out there (here: https://t.co/LpmkJvukzh), but a little tricky. I had to double-check and confirm with dev myself.

As stated in the article, in each pack, there is one slot that is set aside. That slot is guaranteed to include a Mercenary Card you do not yet own, until you own all Mercs of that rarity--then it does other stuff, see article (that's the asterisk above).

The other 4 slots in the pack can be merc portraits, merc coins, or other merc cards.

Normally, the first time you get a merc, you will get their base portrait, with a normal frame. This unlocks the merc as playable . Then, you get the alternative portraits and frames as cool cosmetics, with no gameplay implications.

On rare occasions, you get a special version first (like when you get the Diamond portrait in the pre-purchase bundle). In those cases, you unlock use of the merc as that special version and the base version is still out there for you to open in packs.

BUT, that special spot designated for a new merc until you have all mercs of a particular rarity checks against you owning *any* version of a merc, not just the base version.

So, if you get the pre-purchase bundle, you get a special version of a merc that unlocks play with that merc. You might then open the basic version of that merc in the 4 "free-for-all" slots of any given pack, but you won't get "cheated" a guaranteed* new merc with a duplicate.

@hsdecktech So TL;DR the merc is like the rare in a constructed pack, along with dupe protection?
                    • hsdecktech

Posted 3 years, 11 months ago (Source)
@WickedGood Yeah, that aspect is pretty analogous, just with a different thing that happens once you get all of a rarity and start getting duplicates.

@hsdecktech OK, so maybe this had been already answered, but I'm curious how it interacts with pity, since it seems like the Merc Coins are also attached to rarities. If I pull legendary Merc Coins, does that reset my legendary pity for the actual Merc card or are they separate?

@hsdecktech I was struggling to wrap my head around exactly how it worked when reading through the article on it, but I may just be really dumb

@Hylung The two drop rates don't tie to another like that. Otherwise the math in the article can't work.

@Hylung Lol, sorry, I wasn't trying to call you dumb. It's tricky. That was just my way of saying, "I didn't ping dev about this, but I'm like 99% sure this answer has to be true, based on how I read the article."

@hsdecktech Are gold and diamond portraits obtainable in normal packs, or _only_ through pre-orders/real money?
                    • hsdecktech

@stevens_dan They are obtainable through packs as well, they're just pretty rare because they're rare portraits for already kinda rare mercs (especially the Legendary Diamonds-the rarest possible portrait). There is nothing in mercs that is only accessible through IRL money.

@hsdecktech Thx for the clarification. But just one more question. If you get the pre-purchase and you get the normal version droped in one of the 4 other slots will this count as a legendary for the average 1 in 20 drop rate or is it just a bonus? Same question for the first 10 packs.

@JoramLambrechts It's the weekend, so I can't confirm with dev., but I read the article to mean that the 1/20 and the "first 10 packs" rates apply to the special slot specifically. "One item per pack will always be a Mercenary Card and adhere to the rarity guidelines below..."

@hsdecktech This is something I still don't understand. If I own a special portrait, does that mean I can use/level/upgrade that merc even if I don't own the base portrait of that merc?
                • hsdecktech

Posted 3 years, 11 months ago (Source)
@Wiibomb Yeah, that's correct. Getting any portrait/frame of a merc unlocks that merc as fully playable, with that version.

@hsdecktech also, as a follow up, can I open special portraits of mercs from that special lot? can I open different merc portraits from the other slots in packs different than the ones I own?

@Wiibomb Alright, I got confirmation of the answer to what I think you're asking here. From only opening packs, you will always get the base version first.
                      • hsdecktech

Posted 3 years, 11 months ago (Source)
@Wiibomb So that means you can't open an alt portrait from the special slot until after you own all the mercs of that rarity, then you start getting portraits instead of duplicates. For the other 4 slots, you'd just get the basic versions of mercs you don't own, instead of alt versions.

@hsdecktech If I have enough coins for a mercenary to be fully maxed (or if it already is) will I still earn coins?

Posted 3 years, 11 months ago (Source)
@gtluizmoratelli As of this moment, there is no special rule in place to block/sub those coins once you're already maxed. The team is going to watch the data and see how big of a problem this actually ends up being, and then evaluate how to respond.
