I just find it so infinitely fascinating that the organisation with the most robust analytics and information on real estate in the world couldn’t make real estate investing/house flipping work AT SCALE. Another comforting example of the limits of automation & algorithms. https://t.co/N0FafKDMTB

@joemag_games I also find this really strange considering just buying random houses and selling them 2 years later seems like a viable strategy the last 5 years. Market has just gone up overall?

@IksarHS I’m broad strokes you’re right, the thing is there’s so much more to it. The market goes up both naturally and as people buy and improve real estate, adding real value while removing risks. Buying en masse doesn’t fix roofs, replace wiring. The house stagnates and loses value.

@joemag_games Our house has increased in value by almost 15% in one year without touching it. I’m probably just seeing Orange County real estate and applying it to the rest of the country. Better be rich if you want to live in SoCal :’(

@IksarHS Yeah and I’m sure you shopped around, found one you liked that didn’t require much work. A house in that state will rise in value with the market. A random house might not, plenty of houses are money pits, plenty go unsold for months. I think Zillow is seeing those consequences.

@joemag_games I guess the point is we’d both think that with all those tools and resources Zillow would be a lot better at shopping for the right place than I would
