The Americas Championship in Las Vegas (19th - 20th) - Discussion Thread

The Americas Championship qualifiers are here. Only 2 teams can make it to Blizzcon, so they head into the biggest games of most of these players lives. 5 teams from North America plus champions from Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Australia/New Zealand are all taking part.

I've put this together to hopefully give more insight on the tournament.

Date & Time

Where to Watch?

Qualified Teams

  • Cloud9 (na)
  • COGnitive Gaming (na)
  • compLexity (na)
  • Furious Gaming (la) - took place of Brave.
  • Immunity (anz)
  • Murloc Geniuses (na)
  • Relics (sea)
  • Tempo Storm (na)

Cloud9

Formerly known as Cloud9 Maelstrom, this team has been at the top of the NA scene for a while, having mixed result in the process. They recently achieved 3rd place at MSI MGA, beating Team Liquid and 1st place at ESL Major League finals, beating Tempo Storm in 6 consecutive games, having come from the loser bracket.

COGnitive Gaming

Having achieving qualification to this round during a fantastic 2nd round of qualifiers, the team has recently changed roster with 'iVSlime' coming in for 'Shot'. It's time to see how the switch has affected the team and what they can do.

compLexity

Always close to finals, compLexity have recently achieved qualification through the last round of qualifiers to get to this stage, achieving 3rd. The team are due a big win, is this their chance?

Furious Gaming

The team achieved 3rd place in the Latin American qualifiers and gained qualification due to Brave being unable to attend. Even though this is the case, i'm sure Furious Gaming are gearing up to show everyone what they can do!

Immunity

Now known as Team Immunity, Immunity White came from the losers bracket in the Australia & New Zealand qualifiers to make it to this stage, having to take on Team Exile5 and Immunity Black in the run. A first game against Cloud9 is their chance to prove how good they are.

Murloc Geniuses

The last team from the NA qualifiers to make it to this stage, but not by any luck. A solid team that has had its ups and downs over the last few months, they have a tough start to the day, but if anyone can, i'm sure they can.

Relics

Qualifying as the Singapore Champions, and then through the South East Asia qualifiers, Relics only dropped 1 match on their run to this final qualifer. I know little about the scene, and the standard, but i'm excited to see what they can do!

Tempo Storm

Last on here, but only by name. They have been the strongest team in North America since their roster change, and have had multiple first place finishes; achieving 1st place in all the Blizzcon qualifier rounds! But they have had a few 2nd place finishes recently, against MVP Black and Cloud9, so seeing how they handle this will be worth watching.

Is each "matchup" best of 3? cause I know ESL did best of 5 double elimination for the NA Major League playoffs, and that was a ton of games

All games are Bo3 except Grand Finals which is Bo5.

I'm sorry, but is it possible for someone to ELI5 how the group stage works? aren't you supposed to play everyone in your respective group?

    Sure thing.

The group stages are played as a double elimination bracket with a twist. If you are familiar with double elimination brackets then we are simply not playing the group's grand finals in that bracket. Instead we take the teams that would advance from the upper bracket and place them on opposite sides of the single Elim bracket then we do the same with the two teams that would advance out of the lower bracket from their group.

Hope that helped, if not tune in and we'll explain it further as the day go on!
