The "Can't do anything" bug thread

New: hotfix patch has been deployed to fix this bug. If you got this bug on the newest patch please report about it on the blizzard forum. (Heroes.36.1. patch from august-16-2018)

Can't move in your HotS game? Don't have access to your abilities and talents? Here's what you can do, while the game is still going.

  1. Completely exit the game and Blizzard App.(Force quitting through the task manager) Try to reconnect to the game.

  2. If you have a Discord overlay. Disable Discord and try again. (same goes for other Overlay or keybinding software, but more in-depth in paragraph 5)

  3. Completely exit the game and Blizzard App. Try and delete the Variables.txt from the Documents\Heroes of the Storm file path. Once done, open the Blizzard Desktop App and click the blue logo at the top left. Click on Settings and from the new window, click on Game Settings. Find Heroes of the Storm, and click on Reset In-Game Options. Try to launch the game and reconnect back.

  4. Completely exit the game and Blizzard App. Open the Blizzard Desktop App. Select the Heroes of the Storm tab within the Blizzard app -> Options -> drop down to: Scan and Repair -> Begin Scan. Follow with repair process. Try to launch the game and reconnect back.

  5. This issue can also be caused by a third party conflict such as an Overlay(as Discord for example), or keybinding software, so this is the last one and a long one. Please try and:

  • Disable background programs by using Selective Start-Up.

  • Reset In-Game Options: Select the Heroes of the Storm tab within the Blizzard app -> Options -> drop down to: Game Settings -> Find the Hots section and select: Reset In-Game Options.

That's all. If none of the above helped, then you can't probably reconnect to the game and be able to play. This is the end of a quick help.

Now to the topic. There is a bug in the game right now(after the last Whitemane patch), which prevents you from doing anything in the game. This is what it looks like: You can move your mouse, but you can't click anything - neither left nor right mouse clicks are working. There's no abilities, no hero portrait, no talents. You can use chat, pings and "tab" menu. Sometimes you can use "Esc" menu, sometimes you can see hp/mana(resource) bar. When it occurs? Bug commonly happens right after reconnect occurs. How to reproduce? For some people it always follows the reconnect, but there are a lot of reports from people who experienced this bug, that in other games they had reconnects and there were no bug.

Known ways to prevent this bug from happenening to you:(Well, they are mostly speculations, but if this bug really bothers you they might help):

1) Don't get reconnects. This means that you can't alt+tab(minimize, etc) in the middle of loading screen and you probably can't run another heavy programs while the game is running. Also no alt-tabing.(Bug happens if alt-tabbing in the Borderless Windowed mode too, so better safe than sorry)

2) Run "Scan and repair" every time before the game session(it seems enough for 3-4 games)

3) The problem may be that all your keybindings are somehow become "unbound". It can be fixed by resetting all hotkey settings to default. (thanks EggnCheezBgl)

4) Some people report that they had no problems playing on different accounts. (EU/US change for the same account too)

That's all. Blizzard Support is working on this issue. Blizzard deployed a hotfix patch ( thanks Zobrek ) . No information about leaver penalty that comes with this bug. No information about lost ranked points too. Let's try to help Blizzard to solve this issue by gathering more information. You can do that by leaving a comment with following information:

1) What happened before this bug appeared? (Was it reconnect or something else?)

2) Did this bug happened to you every time you had to reconnect to the game(after Whitemane patch went live)? (It seems that some of us just were unlucky to get it on every reconnect attempt, but I leave the question just in case)

3) How many times did you experience this bug?

4) How many games you played on a newest(Whitemane) patch? (optional)

5) Were you able to use a menu hotkey "Esc"?

6) Were you able to see your hp/mana bars?

7) What actions did you try to resolve this bug? (1-5 or something else)

8) Were you able to resolve the bug? (if yes, what helped?)

9)How the bug affected you after the game was over? (lost ranked points, leaver penalty, inability to play the game again until the bug is fixed, expired stimpack, etc)

I will try to add new information when it becomes available. It's a bug solving thread, so other comments with more in-depth instructions or other ways to solve it will be appreciated. There will be no other thread about bug, so you can leave you frustration about your lost ranked points, leaver penalty, etc here, but don't forget to leave useful information about bug too.

Edit:1) edited and updated solutions and some information. Added new Blizzard response.

2)This bug is now 1 week old. People still experiencing this bug in the game. No new responses from Blizzard.

3)Hotfix for bug has been released.

    Hey all,

    We just released a patch in all regions that aims to fix this issue but please let us know if you continue to experience any loss of control.

    Thanks for consolidating all the information into one thread, it was very helpful when trying to identify the root case.
