Eight zones: The six normal ones (Library, Hand, Battlefield, Graveyard, Stack, Exile) and two special ones (Ante and Command).
There's also the ninth "un-zone" of "Outside the Game" which is what Ring of Ma'rûf and the Wishes (Burning Wish, Living Wish, etc) interact with. In tournaments your sideboard is considered Outside the Game, and in casual play it's your entire collection.

Playing with the exile zone (formerly the 'Removed from Game Zone) has been happening since 'Ring of Martuf'. It's a rare effect and will probably continue to be a rare effect.
I don't understand why people are so against change like this. It doesn't make the game worse, it creates a more dynamic environment in which cards can be designed.
Imagine a card like this: 2BW Return target card from exile to the battlefield under your control, exile a creature you control.
A card like that is dripping with flavor to be exploited. It's like wrangling a creature's soul from the aether but at the cost of replacing it with another's soul.
This is a good expansion of the game, not a bad one.
TL;DR: Girl look at that body.

Ring of Ma'rûf can not get cards that have been Exiled. It used to be able to get cards that were "removed from game", but that got changed at some point.
Also, Misthollow is easily abused with that WU land that exiles cards in graveyards for spirit tokens. You drop the Griffin, swing with it. When they kill it you get a token and play the Griffin back. It's a small effect, but it's tenacious and powerful for WU control.

Ring of Ma'rûf
Ring of Ma'rûf cannot get a card from the Exile zone. The relevant rules for "outside the game" are:
400.10. An object is outside the game if it isn't in any of the game's zones. Outside the game is not a zone.
400.10a Cards in a player's sideboard are outside the game. See rule 100.4.
