There were a TON of spoilers yesterday for the upcoming Core 2021 set that is due to release this month on MTG Arena - June 25. Let's check out the spoilers, but first, we're going to give a quick overview of the important parts of the set.

Core 2021 Overview

We have to start things off with keywords because this is super exciting to see.

  • Sending the top X cards of a deck to a graveyard is now officially referred to as mill on cards! Millstone represent!
  • Phasing returns! When cards phase-out, they are treated as if they don't exist but still remain in play.
  • Prowess - Creatures with prowess get +1/+1 until end of turn whenever a noncreature spell is cast by their controller.

Now, some more important things about Core 2021.

  • Hound has been trashed. Hello Dog! The Hound creature type has been changed to Dog.
  • Favourites Grim Tutor & Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, and Azusa, Lost but Seeking are being reprinted!
  • Chandra, Garruk, Liliana, and Teferi are all present as our return planeswalkers.
  • Basri Ket, a Planeswalker representing white, has been added into the mix.
  • We're getting a special physical product that ties-in to MTG Arena - The Magic Arena Starter Kit (more on that later).
  • Sparkhunter Masticore is a card that has protection from Planeswalkers - cool!
  • There are special showcase frames on several cards from each of the Planeswalkers including their lands!

The Magic Arena Starter Kit

This is an interesting one! The Spellslinger Starter Kit of the past has been given a fresh name and ties-in to MTG Arena. The old kits would teach Magic to new players through inserts added to the product but now, they're using MTG Arena as the tutorial to get started.

  • Magic Arena Starter Kit comes with two 60-card decks.
