Strixhaven Set Mechanics
Strixhaven introduces 3 new mechanics, as well as 1 returning one.
Learn and Lesson
Whenever you learn, you may either discard a card to draw a card, tutor a lesson from your sideboard, or neither.
Magecraft
Whenever you cast or copy an instant or sorcery, trigger an effect.
Ward
Whenever an oppenent targets this creature, they must pay the ward cost or the spell is countered.
Modal Double-Faced Cards
Returning once again from Zendikar Rising and Kaldheim are the Modal Double-Faced Cards, MDFCs. Each school has its own deans that serve as both enablers as well as payoffs, depending on which side is cast. There are also another 5 MDFCs in each respective school, with them being a permanent on the front side and either an instant or sorcery on the other.

Having fun so far. Had a few cards to mesh into current decks as well as some stuff to make new decks. White/red aggro and spell are suddenly very good it seems. There's a lot of hate cards for Yorian which is just wonderful. Revel in Silence has proven to help aggro decks absolutely destroy control along with Elite Spellbinder. I like control but Yorian has just been so annoyingly dominant lately.
Hot take though is I'm wondering if there are bans around the corner, particularly for Bonecrusher Giant which seems to fit into so many decks and is in almost every meta standard deck right now. Going to have fun playing around with new styles though!
Day 1: R/W does indeed seem to be very strong in standard. I know everyone's experimenting right now but I'm 11-3 with the deck. I'm also 4-2 with my W/B cleric deck, they defiantly got some love and there's choice removal for cheap now. I've seen a lot of people experimenting with G/U today but the decks seem wonky. I see potential there and it might refine quickly, could just be a dud though.
Last thing of note, bug in the game for many people including myself. After you clear your daily quests (start with 3 after a new expansion launch) the visual bar that tracks quests, dailies, and weeklies goes away. You still get your rewards but there is no visual indication of this. Annoying for new cards you win as rewards because they aren't even showing up in your collection as 'new'. Hope it gets sorted soon enough, because at this point I don't even know if I'll be able to see my quest bar when I get a new quest tomorrow.
Ran into this issue as well. It seems like it fixes itself every day (when the quests reset maybe?) but then once I clear the daily quests it all goes *poof*. Kinda annoying.
Made my first Draft deck this expat. Shaile, Dean of Radiance // Embrose, Dean of Shadow is really good, and it even has some other side, Embrose mumble, that I may use or not. The Learn/Lesson mechanic is strong (no surprise there), and Ward makes even weak-statted cards like Owlin Shieldmage hard to deal with. Lots of cards with only split Mana err... circles(?) means you can put some cards from different Colleges together without splashing. So while the flavor could be better it seems fun so far.
(Edit:Trying to figure out this mtgcard thing)
Another day, another draft. U/G this time, featuring Body of Research and Wormhole Serpent. Went 5-3, but more importantly I got the meme 26/26 unblockable fractal combo once. Forgot to take a pic for posterity unfortunately.
Edit: And I love (seriously!) that Body of Research links to a version with Spanish text. I can read enough to know the translation is spot on.
Not really excited this time to be honest. The whole theme seems a bit off to me (could be a HS expansion) and the cards are pretty meh too. But that is probably just me :) Hope you have fun with the new expansion
I mean... It is: Scholomance Academy, released less than a year ago.
Yeah, that's my biggest issue with the set, that being it feels too much like an HS expansion. The trailer is so 'cartoony' clashes with the usual seriousness that MTG has. As a degenerate storm player, there's a ton of cards here that I'm interested in trying out since Magecraft lends itself so easily to that sort of deck, but I can definitely see the cards being underwhelming if you don't play older formats. Hopefully, though you'll be able to find a few cards that'll pique your interest!
If you're looking for something more mature in terms of trailer, check out this video for Silverquill made by the Command Zone. I think Josh and Jimmy really outdid themselves -- it made me excited about the new set! There will be one for each Strixhaven school.
