Drek’Thar and Loatheb Are the Latest Cards To Join Hearthstone’s Diamond Club

While datamining the game for cool stuff, we discovered something really interesting. Loatheb, the big mushroom lad from Naxxramas, is getting the Diamond treatment. You can obtain him by owning 30 Naxxarams cards, but that doesn't appear to work at the moment. This is the second wild-only card to get the extra bling after Ragnaros the Firelord.

He's not the only Diamond card we're getting with the launch of Voyage to the Sunken City. Aside from Sir Finley, Sea Guide and Invalid Deck ID, who are available as Diamond cards for purchasing the Sunken City Tavern Pass and obtaining 25 Sunken City Legendaries, respectively, Diamond Drek'Thar is available for purchase for 3000 Coins or 25 USD or regional equivalent. This is the first time a Diamond is purchasable, but there's a good chance it won't be the last.

  • i could buy Drek'thar with the game gold, but is really too much expensive, i hope people skip him so maybe in the future will be cheaper, even 2k gold would be more acceptable!

  • I have to admit I bought this diamond card with gold. Could have opened 70 packs on launch day. Now opening only 40. Not complaining though.I am still quite happy with my bling. Even as a F2P player (except for the battlepass) for 3 years now.

  • Drek'Thar doesn't even look that good. He's just standing in the rain staring at you slack-jawed.

  • Buy 30 packs with gold and have a guaranteed legendary when the expansion drops, or buy a single diamond card… gee, I wonder what I'll choose. The only thing missing for this to be a robbery is a weapon.

  • Curious to know why they added Loatheb in diamond, maybe Naxx will be added into classic mode?

    • or they are just going in a chronological order of the wild expansions. They also most likely would have announced that already if it's going to happen any time soon.

  • Putting the cost of Diamond Drek’Thar aside, it’s still a strange choice. Most players already have an uncraftable version of the card, and in just one year he’ll rotate out of Standard. Wouldn’t it make more sense for the first paid Diamond card to be a brand new one right at the start of a year?

    • They already had the assets for this, and releasing it to the shop was always the plan. Remember the contest? They didn't just whip up the diamond Vanndar after they determined the winner. They had both cards ready to go before the battle even began.

  • Loatheb is great! Can't wait to get that, when the achievement works.

    Drek'thar, sure it's cost is high but you can get it with coin and it's not like we didn't already get free copies of him. I don't see the issue here as it's really just a cosmetic upgrade from the golden one.  If it wasn't so close to an expansion drop I might of spent the coins on this. It does look cool.

    • Yep, they are really milking the proverbial cashcow here...

      They are basically monetizing an animation's work that should already be priced in the whole expansion development cost...

       

      At least, there's an option for buying it in gold.

       

      That being said, I guess you have to also consider the consumer mindset... There's actually people who would protest :

      - If it was not available at all.

      - If it were cheap. Because somehow, it's a way to say "I am a die hard Horde player". So lessening its price would lessen the "die hard" part.

       

      If you know you cannot please everyone, I guess it's logical to try to make the most out of it.

  • On the one hand I do agree that this diamond skin for purchase is horrendously overpriced.  On the other hand, it's a purely optional cosmetic and whales are gonna whale, so why care if someone wants to dump that much money on a diamond skin?

  • I love the diamond cards animation, but that frame is so off from hearthstone, look like is from another TCG

    • Yeah, i have hated that border from the first time i saw it. I love the animated cards, but the border is just horrendous.

    Also, Drek'Thar is stupid expensive, but I am super grateful they are offering him for coins too. I have more coins than I know what to do with just gather dust, so this is an insta cop
