Hello, duelists! Almost two months ago, we had a special article that celebrated the 20th anniversary of Yu-Gi-Oh's very first booster pack, Legend of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon. In it, players had the ability to choose one of 3 iconic monsters: Dark Magician, Red-Eyes Black Dragon, and the titular Blue-Eyes White Dragon, which would get you a site banner themed around your choice (that's still up, btw).

We've also kept track of how many picks each card had, and the results were pretty surprising. This is what we're going to talk about in this article. But before you read it, go into the comment section and tell us who you think got the most picks. There's a really good chance you'll be wrong.

Full disclaimer: The sample size we have here is incredibly small and shouldn't be taken as a representation of the Yu-Gi-Oh community as a whole. This article is mostly just a fun thing we noticed on our site.

The Two Great Rivals

Yugi Muto and Seto Kaiba are some of, if not the most popular characters in the Yu-Gi-Oh anime, and this extends to their ace Monsters. Those are some of the oldest cards in the franchise, going as far back as Bandai's first booster set. Their archetypes are also some of the most supported over the years, with both of them getting new cards as recently as Battle of Chaos.

So, which of them got the most clicks in out 20th anniversary article? Funny enough, was initially a draw! Both Dark Magician and Blue-Eyes White Dragon settled at 14 votes around two weeks after the article went up. This means that people are usually split right down the middle when it comes to these two cards, at least in our very small sample group.

However, things don't end here. A little over a week ago, on 4/20, we released an article talking about the "Pot of..." series of cards, and we linked to the anniversary article, since that's when Pot of Greed was also released. This means that more people got to pick a card from the three, rising the final score to 18 for Blue-Eyes and 17 for Dark Magician, meaning Kaiba finally manage to beat Yugi at something.

Red-Eyed Underdog

Aside from Yugi and Kaiba, there's a third character whose archetype still sees play to this day: Joey Wheeler/Katsuya Jonouchi. His Red-Eyes Black Dragon is as old as the other two cards in this article, and both the character and the card are as popular as the others, mainly due to Joey's status as an underdog compared to Yugi and Kaiba.

Red-Eyes is also an archetype with long-term, albeit less frequent,  support. The most recent card being Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon released in 2020, a combination of both Yugi's and Joey's Ace Monsters, but which only carries "Red-Eyes" by name. Fun fact: Hundred Eyes Dragon initially had a hyphen between the first two words in its name, but that was errata'd away so it doesn't belong to the Red-Eyes archetype as a technicality.

Whether it's because of Joey's status as an underdog, the playstyle of the archetype, or just the overall aesthetic of Red-Eyes, but they're the ones who got the most votes in the original run, beating both Dark Magician and Blue-Eyes with 16 votes. This number increased after the Pot article to 18, still beating the former, but tying with the latter. Either way, Kaiba is seething!

Did you enjoy this little experiment of ours? What other archetypes would you like to see get these kinds of votes? Let us know in the comments below!
