Well, that was fast. The Stop Destroying Videogames initiative, which had a little under a month to reach 1 million signatures... just reached them. Just to give you an idea of how fast this has grown, the initiative was sitting at only around 450,000 signatures on the 23rd of June, a week and a half ago. It got more than half the required amount of signatures needed in less than two weeks.
And the good news keep on piling. The equivalent UK bill also reach its (obviously smaller) threshold of 100,000 signatures by quite a bit. Keep an eye out for UK news on what happens next with this one, if you're a UK citizen.
BUT IT'S NOT OVER! A good number of those signatures will be invalidated, and the initiative needs 1 million valid signatures to move forward. The number should be around 1.2-1.3 million to be safe, probably more. If the rate of signatures keeps up, that number will be reached by the end of the month with no issues, but we can't rest on our laurels. If you're an EU citizen, go sign it! Otherwise, spread the word.
So what happens next? Well, once the initiative is validated, it will be about 6 months before all the necessary bureaucracy is sorted out, so it'll be a while until we hear from this again. After that, the proper EU powers-that-be will be discussing it, and we'll have to see what happens then.
Have you signed the initiative yet? What do you expect to come of it when it passes? Let us know in the comments below!
