Blizzard Previews The Cataclysm Community Events and Balance Patches

Blizzard has given us a preview on future community events for the upcoming Cataclysm expansion, with theorycrafting streams, a new pre-release brawl, and some card changes.

All in all we have the following:

Theorycrafting livesteams from March 5 to March 6
- North America, Latin America, Europe, Middle East, and Africa - March 5 9AM to 9PM PST
- Asia-Pacific - March 6 2AM to 8AM PST
- If you're not sure what those times translates to in your local timezone, typing it into a search bar should convert the time for you.
New pre-release Tavern brawl from March 10 to March 17. Notably it contains the pre-rotation Event and Core sets, in addition to giving all players temporary access to Deathwing, Worldbreaker, marking the only instance that Deathwing and a few select cards will be in Standard at the same time.
Stream pack drops from March 10 to March 14 - Win up to 8 packs (5 Across the Timeways and 3 Cataclysm) for watching Hearthstone streams (2 hours per drop)
Constructed card changes
- All locations from Elise the Navigator have gone to 2 Durability (down from 3). All of the effects of each option has been nerfed (read below), and it is no longer possible to get the Radiant Crystal option on the 1-Cost location.
- Blob of Tar now costs 5 mana (up from 4), but both tokens now have 2 Attack (up from 1).
- Creature of Madness now has 1 Health (down from 2).
- Prescient Slitherdrake now has 8 Health (down from 9).
- Stonecarver can no longer buff itself with its own effect, but it can still buff other copies of it.
- Unleash the Crocolisks now costs 2 mana (up from 1).
- Ursine Maul now conducts a normal draw instead of tutoring your highest-Cost card.
- Deja Vu no longer makes the card it Discovers cost (1) less.
- Remnant of Rage is now a 5/4 (down from 6/5).

CATACLYSM Theorycrafting Livestreams March 5 - 6

Join your favorite content creators as they prepare for the coming CATACLYSM and theorycraft the new expansion. Participants will be streaming on their own personal channels, so make sure you’re following your favorite creators when they go live!

NA/LATAM/EMEA players will play on March 5, 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. PT

APAC players will play on March 6, 2:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. PT

All participants need to include at least 10 CATACLYSM cards in their decks (that can be 10 individual cards, 5 duplicates, or anything in between).

Theorycrafters rally in defense of Azeroth! Theorycasting will also be returning on the official Hearthstone Twitch channel. Join them as they watch and cast games from our battle‑hardened theorycrafters across participating channels.

Raven, Sottle, HaiSayaka and Odemian will be Theorycasting on March 5, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. PT

Twitch Drops will be enabled category-wide from March 5, 9:00 a.m. to March 6, 9:00 a.m. PT, so you can watch any Hearthstone stream you’d like to earn up to 2 CATACLYSM packs (make sure you link your Twitch and Battle.net accounts so that your viewing time counts towards the drops). On top of that, participating streamers will have Pre-Purchase Mega Bundle codes to give away to their audiences during the event!

Pre-Release Tavern Brawl from March 10 - 17

We’ve got some exciting updates for the Pre-Release Tavern Brawl. This is an event where you get to open your CATACLYSM packs early, build a deck, and compete to earn rewards.

The Deathwing, Worldbreaker Hero Card will be available for everyone to play in the Pre-Release Tavern Brawl, even if you don’t own it yet, so you can jump straight into CATACLYSM and the new Herald mechanic! Please note that this is a temporary rental. You can also obtain the card for your Collection through the normal means of CATACLYSM packs and, once the expansion launches, crafting.

We’ve heard your requests for the new cards to shine more in Pre-Release Tavern Brawl, so we’re removing older cards that tend to dominate the format.

How to Play in the CATACLYSM Pre-Release Tavern Brawl

All players will get one entry into the Pre-Release Tavern Brawl for free. After that, each entry will cost 2 Tavern Tickets, 300 Gold, or 400 Runestones. On each run, lock in a deck and play until you get either 6 wins or 3 losses and earn more new cards based on how well you do!

Community Days March 10 -14

Community Days return with free packs you can use in the Pre-Release Tavern Brawl! From March 10, 10:00 a.m. - March 14, 10:00 a.m. PT, you can get up to 8 packs just for watching any Hearthstone stream (2 hours per drop)!

Balance Preview for Patch 35.0 (coming March 10)

Rounding things out, we have a handful of balance changes coming to Standard with Patch 35.0. These updates will be active during our Theorycrafting and Pre‑Release Tavern Brawl events. They are in addition to our usual balance adjustments for cards rotating into Wild. Keep an eye out for the full 35.0 Patch Notes for details on those changes.

Dev Comment: To give Deathwing the truly cataclysmic entrance he deserves, we are dialing back a few standout cards from previous expansions to raze the established meta and make room for new cards and strategies. Elise the Navigator is receiving the most significant updates across her kit, and Ursine Maul is also receiving a notable reduction in power, while the rest of the balance changes are on the lighter side. Our goal is for these cards to take a step back in the meta rather than disappear from it entirely. We hope you enjoy trying out the new cards in this refreshed landscape as we kick off a new year of Hearthstone!

All locations' Durability: 3 → 2

Bursting Geyser (Deathrattle: Deal X damage to all enemies.)

Blob of Tar

Old: [4 mana] 2/4. Deathrattle: Summon a 1/2 Blob with Poisonous and a 1/2 Blob with Taunt.

New: [5 mana] 4/4. Deathrattle: Summon a 2/2 Blob with Poisonous and a 2/2 Blob with Taunt.

Dev Comment: While neutral outliers were a focus in this patch, we still believe there’s an important place for strong mid‑game defensive tools like Blob of Tar. We’re reducing its overall power and breaking up its repetitive play pattern with Ravenous Felhunter, while also providing a compensatory buff to support its board‑focused role. We’ll be keeping an eye on Felhunter as we evaluate its power level in a post‑rotation environment with fewer available targets.

Creature of Madness

Old: 1/2.

New: 1/1.

Prescient Slitherdrake

Old: 6/9.

New: 6/8.

Stonecarver

Old: At the end of your turn, give a random friendly damaged minion +2/+2.

New: At the end of your turn, give another friendly damaged minion +2/+2.

Dev Comment: Stonecarver can no longer buff itself. Multiple copies can still buff one another.
