Fortnite's Save the World is Now Free to Play

Fortnite's origin story before it became a battle royale game, Save the World, has gone free to play. Let's see what that means for the future of the game mode and what it means for everyone that purchased the original game.

What If you Owned Save the World Before F2P?

Epic announced that Save the World would go free to play around a month ago. All players who previously owned the game have now unlocked:

  • 1x Hero Supercharger – Promote a Hero beyond Level 50.

  • 1x Weapon Supercharger – Promote a weapon beyond Level 50.

  • 1x Trap Supercharger – Promote a Trap beyond Level 50.

  • 5x Survivor Supercharger – Promote Survivors beyond Level 50.

  • 1x Hero Recruitment Voucher – Recruit a Hero of your choice.

  • 1x Weapon Research Voucher – Unlock a weapon of your choice.

  • 10000 Gold – Spend in the Event Store (to be renamed “the Exchange”) for valuable items.

Founders will continue earning V-Bucks through Daily Quests, Mission Alerts, Storm Shield Defense Missions, and existing Challenges.

The v40.00 Update

Prior to Save the World going completely free, Epic pushed out a massive update to the game to make improvements across almost every system.

  • Progression has been simplified with less micromanagement and instead relying more on participation.

  • Loot drops are now spread more evenly across zones.

  • Heroes, Survivors, Defenders, and Schematics earned through Quests and Mission Alerts will be granted at an appropriate Level and Tier that match the difficulty of the completed Mission:

    • Mission Alert rewards will be based on the completed Mission’s difficulty.

    • For Quests, this only applies if the Quest requires you to complete a Mission at or above a certain difficulty.

  • Fewer resources are required for upgrades.

  • Hero and Survivor XP has been merged to be one thing called People XP.

  • After looting at least one weapon or Trap and successfully completing a Mission, you’ll earn a Schematic Research Token.

    • Contribute to the Mission success to earn one! Back at Homebase, you’ll be able to use that Token to research one weapon or Trap found during that Mission into an identical Schematic, turning exciting drops into lasting additions to your arsenal.

  • No more button mashing at the end of a mission; Only one single "Skip" button now needs to be clicked.

Epic provided a list of bug fixes that also arrived:

Save the World Today

The Homebase

Homebase just got a massive upgrade, evolving from a menu-based hub into a fully explorable space that grows alongside your progression. As you move through its two floors, you’ll find familiar characters and spots inspired by the classic menus, with the atmosphere changing as you unlock features and make progress. It’s also a great place to regroup and hang out with your party between Missions.

Jess & Penny Missions

Fortnite: Save the World and Battle Royale are crossing paths through June 5.

Jess and Penny are on a mission, and they need your help on the Battle Royale Island. Find Penny at the Builder’s Barracks and Jess at her nearby campground, then take on their crossover Quests to gain Battle Pass XP along the way. After completing two Quests in the Working with Jess Questline, you’ll be able to purchase the Super Shredder from Jess for that match - a powerful Shotgun-Sniper Rifle hybrid.

Complete the full Questline to send them home and unlock the Super Shredder Schematic in Save the World.

You can also unlock the Jess Outfit by earning 350,000 XP in Save the World during the crossover.

Unusual Readings at Homebase…

A mysterious signal has drawn the Dark Voyager to Homebase. Head out to investigate his sudden arrival, gather intel and stop his drones from reporting back to the menacing ship.

Completing the A Voyager’s Arrival Questline by April 23 will reward you with People XP, Schematic XP, and an Upgrade Llama.

Auto-Level Your Roster

You can now use People XP to automatically level up Heroes and Defenders in your active Loadout, along with Survivors in your Squads. Enable it under Settings > Game > Save the World - Automatically Apply XP.

Note: If you’re just getting started, auto-leveling will already be enabled.

Keybind Update

If you’re heading into Save the World for the first time, your existing Battle Royale keybinds will automatically carry over where possible. If you already play both experiences and your bindings don’t match, you’ll get a pop-up letting you choose whether to sync them, with shared inputs taking priority from BR.

That's a wrap on what's new in Save the World. Are you going to go and check it out? Did you buy the game originally and feel like the move to making it free to play was a good one? Let us know in the comments below.
