The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Is Getting New Dlc - Songs of the Past Releases 2027

Published 3 weeks, 2 days ago by

Well, this is unexpected. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, CD Projekt Red's flagship fantasy title, is getting new DLC next year. We don't have any information of what the contents are, only the name (Songs of the Past), but the name implies it could be a prequel before the events of the main game, or at least before the story ends.

The expansion is co-developed by Fool's Theory, who are known for The Thaumaturge and Seven: The Days Long Gone, and are currently working on the Witcher remake. They've also acted as a support studio for Baldur's Gate 3, Outriders, Silent Hill 2, and more.

Unfortunately, there's also some bad news. For one, the expansion will release only on current-gen platforms (so no PS4 or Xbox One), and it's not coming to either Switch system (though a Switch 2 version sometime in the future might still happen). Along with the new expansion, CDPR will also be increasing the PC system requirements for the game. Check out our dedicated article on the matter.

Medallion's humming... that can only mean one thing! It's time to announce we're working on a brand new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt!

Get ready to return to the Path with Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Songs of the Past, coming to PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in 2027.

We’re currently co-developing the expansion with Fool’s Theory and we’ll share more in late summer, so stay tuned!

With new content coming to the game, we also need to update our system requirements to ensure smooth performance and compatibility going forward for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Songs of the Past. These requirements will become effective starting from the next update.

Are you excited for Geralt's new adventures? How many Gwent packs do you think it took to get him out of retirement? Let us know in the comments below!

  • The last expansion, Blood and Wine, released in 2016 and now we're getting a new one in 2027.

When else has a game had an 11-year gap in-between two major content releases?

    • Age of Empires 2!

It has a 13 year gap. Conquerers dropped in 2000 and then Age of Empires II HD released with The Forgotten in 2013.. it counts, right?

I think the craziest part about AoE2 though is the whole "let's drop the Definitive Edition in 2019 and then make a new expansion or two for it every year since" because that was not on my bingo card for the game lol. And that's with AoE 3 and AoE 4 both being things. AoE 2 is just unbeatable and for good reason.

It's like how Brood War is still played to this day. There's just something about those old RTS games, its probably a good thing that we won't see a true expansion for the original StarCraft, but it is nice it sees occasional adjustments with the remake.

      • Oh, yeah, that counts. My Titan Quest example is for the Anniversary Edition, and this Witcher 3 one is also kind of a new version of the game.

There's also the new Reign of Warlock expansion that dropped back in February for Diablo II Resurrected. That's 25 years between the original and the DLC.

        • Oh yeah, Diablo II totally counts too. Holy hell hahaha. I totally blanked on the fact Blizzard did that, it was just out of nowhere too which made it even cooler.

It is nice that these games that weren't "live service" can still see updates now because they are still being played. Maybe I'm just being nostalgic but they are genuinely some of the best games ever made and so there's a reason they are still being played and are worthy of being updated.

It's funny to consider the corporate return on investment there though. Like D2 had been out forever and a half, they remastered it that cost money and of course they made back the cost because everyone bought it, but I can't imagine it was that expensive to make happen. So dropping an expansion for it as well? Giga brain move.

    • Titan Quest. The first expansion, Immortal Throne, released in 2007, while the second, Ragnarök, was released in 2017. It got two more later, Atlantis in 2019 and Eternal Embers in 2021.
