It's Friday so we've got news from the Factorio team on the blog! In Friday Facts #440 we've learned more about Factorio's upcoming 2.1 update, which is the last planned major update for the game.
Quote From Factorio We envision 2.1 as our last major update of Factorio, and we will shift the focus onto long term support. So things like bug fixes, platform support/compatibility, modding features, etc. Other than that we feel we've reached a good place to conclude the active gameplay development.
Factorio 2.1 Timeline
The team is expecting to do some closed beta testing over the next few weeks, the in-office playtest went "super smoothly" with a complete playthrough of the game on all planets taking them 53 hours and 15 minutes. No big bugs, desync, or save corruption, woo!
By the end of June is when 2.1 is expected to drop on the experimental branch so anyone will be able to opt-in to downloading it to play and test it out. 2.1 will remain experimental throughout the summer so mod authors can have lots of time to update mods.
What's In Factorio 2.1?
The developers have yet to give us exact details, which is unfortunate. However, we have a general idea of what's to come in 2.1.
Quality of Life changes
"Small features"
Fixes and polish for the game
Improvements for modding
There are no new planets, enemies, or research planned for the update.
Quote From Factorio Generally, we are happy with the game design of Factorio and Space age. The progression is good, things are mostly well balanced (one or two exceptions), and there isn't anything we feel is majorly missing. That is to say, we didn't go into 2.1 development with grand designs of large new pieces of content or huge features.
The team over at Wube is beginning to work on new games, and they've hired new people to join the team to make that happen. Some old team members have left to move on to their own endeavours as well (more info in the blog) which makes a lot of sense with Factorio being feature complete, it makes for a great breaking point.
Do you feel that Factorio is finished or was there something you always thought should be in the base game?
