ArenaNet Reveals Guild Wars 3, Calling It a “Modern Evolution of the MMORPG”

Guild Wars 3? You bet! Explore Tyria like never before in ArenaNet's new title, and wow, it looks incredible. The announcement trailer, which what are you waiting for, go watch it now, contains in-engine footage from their internal alpha test and... just watch.

ArenaNet is claiming Guild Wars 3 to a be a "modern evolution of the MMORPG" which is a massive claim and we are curious to see exactly what that means. You can play the game solo, or form a band of adventurers, to take on Tyria.

Graphically, the game is very stylized and incredibly high fidelity which is seen in both environments and characters from the brief glimpses we've seen so far.

The game takes place in Orr, and is set more than a thousand years before the original game, Guild Wars. This gives new and old fans a brand new place to explore, imbued with magic and alive with the vitality of the wilds. The devs want to make a game that has design that is easy enough to get lost in for hours but will also respect your time and investment as a player, which if they even only reach 50% on that promise, it's a huge improvement from MMORPG titan, World of Warcraft, has to offer to players which does not respect player time.

Combat is said to be all about strategy, whether you are using a keyboard and mouse or a controller, which rewards strategic skill use, positioning, and movement. Think ARPG combat meeting the MMORPG genre.

In the coming weeks we can expect to see a look at the timeline, the settings, the Six Gods, and the capital city of Arah.

Guild Wars 3 arrives on Steam and PlayStation 5 with the beta test beginning Fall 2027. You can pre-register to have a chance of playing early on the official website, GuildWars3.com, though as of writing the website is down.

  • I am genuinely interested in Guild Wars 3, especially when the studio says they want to respect player's time.

World of Warcraft doesn't do it anymore for me. The game is rotten and for a few expansions now I felt like my time just wasn't respected. I think there's a lot more to it than that on a personal level, but a huge aspect of it is definitely the time. It's too much of a chore and there are just way too many things now that are always flashing about for you to do. If I don't login for a few weeks, it's even worse and I just log my ass off.

I'm curious how Guild Wars 3 will approach that. I've played a bit of Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 and the games weren't for me at the time, but I was also maddeningly addicted (I use this phrase correctly) to World of Warcraft so other games couldn't hold my attention like it could. Even Wildstar which has a pretty dope combat system, was thrown to the side for WoW.

The game looks absolutely beautiful though. I love the art style they've got going for Guild Wars 3 and the idea this is a thousand years in the past means I need to know absolutely nothing about the current games to get sucked into the narrative. Hell yeah.
