A Deeper Look into Gears of War: E-Day

Gears of War: E-Day was the first game showed off during the Xbox Showcase, and towards the end of the stream, they delved a bit deeper into the workings of the game.

There's no individual video for just the deep dive section, but you can watch it in the full broadcast from 2:01:25 until the very end.

We've learned a lot about the game and the philosophy behind it from the nearly 30 minutes that we're able to see of it.

  • Not counting remasters, this is the first Gears of War game to properly use the "Gears of War" title since Gears of War 4 in 2016.

  • The game takes place on "Emergence Day" (hence the subtitle), or in other words, the day that the Locust Horde invaded Sera.

  • By extension, this is the earliest game in the series chronologically. After "peace has finally been declared on Sera".

  • According to Nicole Fawcette, the game also takes place over the span of three days.

  • "We added the ability to jump."

  • There's also a new sliding feature.

  • Kalona is the "largest, most complex" location in a Gears game.

  • This game will mark the very first time Gill Gettner, a character otherwise exclusive the franchise's literature, will appear in one of its games.

  • The technology of facial features has been improved tremendously. According to Kate Rayner, Marcus has more detail in his eyelashes alone than his entire character model did in the original game in 2006.

  • They tracked down the same chainsaw model they used for the chainsaw sound effect in the original 2006 game to use in this one.

  • Open beta happens this summer.
