OpenRCT2 Version 0.5.3 Has Released - New Inverted Coaster Track Pieces, Linux Functionality Improved, and More!

OpenRCT2 has released yet another update. This one is about adding new track pieces to the Inverted Coaster, and also fixing some bugs that were present even in the original game.

If you're a Linux user and you want to play OpenRCT2, you're also in luck because this update dramatically improves the Linux functionality.

New Track Pieces for the Inverted Roller Coaster

The original RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 is nearly 25 years old now, and the first release of OpenRCT2 is nearly 12 years old. There have been a lot of new coaster developments in that timeframe. Not only have new track pieces been added to some of the existing roller coasters, but there have even been entirely new rides added to the game by the fans.

The Inverted Coaster is the newest member of the club of vanilla rides with some not-so vanilla track pieces. It's gained a number of new possibilities. The first of these new track pieces are these 45-degree inclined turns, which can be banked or unbanked.

The original game offered a small and large half loop size, but this update has added some absolutely insane technology. The medium half loop!

Flat on the ground, you can also now add large corkscrews.

That's not all either. Cheats can also enable even more track pieces, but I'll let your minds run for that one.

Cheat to Disable Grass Growing

Everyone knows about the overgrown grass mechanic in the game, but not everyone knows the significance that overgrown grass has. And the answer is... Absolutely nothing! Overgrown grass has zero negative effect on the guests or the rides or anything. It is entirely a visual mechanic for the player.

Still, if you like to keep a nice looking lawn in your park as you play the game, this mechanic is for you. When you enable the new "Disable grass growing" cheat, all of the grass will never change their growth stage.

Another feature of the game that very famously has no effect on the game at all is the ability to mow grass. This eventually got so bad that the second game changed Handymen to have that task disabled by default.

If you're one of the single-digit number of people in recorded human history that tends to grass moving in the game, you may see some sweet relief in knowing that your Handymen can still mow the grass, and it will still provide the stripe effect. Now only that, but the stripe effect will also stay there permanently.

Linux-Wine Functionality Improved

Do you like to take a glass of wine with your OpenRCT2 session?

Linux users can rejoice because the functionality of installing OpenRCT2 on Wine on Linux systems has been improved dramatically.

If you have either RCT1 or RCT2 installed on Wine on a Linux system, OpenRCT2 will not properly detect those installations.

Numerous Bug Fixes

As with any OpenRCT2 release, a lot of bugs were also fixed. Some of them are pretty weird ones too.

A mechanic in the original game that basically no one knows about is the fact that some of the wall tiles count as transparent and some of them don't. This is used in determining if a guest can watch a ride or the construction of one, but because both of the expansion packs are notoriously not well put together, no walls from either of the expansion packs counted as transparent no matter what they looked like.

Both the height and the distance of the walls in relation to the path would have an influence on this, and it's honestly really fascinating to learn about this. This video by Marcel Vos explains this mechanic and the bugs associated with it.

The algorithm for how air time influenced ride stats were also bugged. Some rides would gain a stat bonus for having air time, whereas others would have a stat penalty for the air time. In general, the coasters with lap bar restraints gained a bonus, whereas coasters with shoulder restraints had a penalty, although exceptions isn't.

Both the bonuses and penalties were calculated after stat requirement penalties were calculated, which is inconsistent with the way the rest of OpenRCT2 works (and in my opinion, how it should work). Once again, Marcel Vos has a video all about this strange behavior.
