Nintendo to Discontinue the Original Switch in the EU Starting in 2027

It's the end of an era! (really not liking how often that quote can be used nowadays) Nintendo just announced that the Switch 2 is getting a revision with a user-replaceable battery, and, buried in the FAQ for that article, there's a note that the Nintendo Switch (the original) will cease being sold in the EU starting February 2027.

Specifically, the Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite, Switch Pro Controller, Pokemon GO Plus + (yes, that's its name), as well as the Nintendo Store-exclusive NES, SNES and Mega Drive controllers, will no longer be sold in the EU starting mid-February. Of note is that the original Joy-Cons will still be sold with a new revision.

This is likely because of a new law (detailed in the article liked above) that requires user-replaceable batteries. Nintendo probably didn't see it as worth it to make a new revision for a console that has been on the shelf for close to 10 years by that point. That's one hell of a run for any device. While it hasn't been confirmed yet, it's possible the console with stop sales in other regions around the same time.

Quote From Nintendo of Europe

The below products will not be replaced by versions that contain user-replaceable batteries in Europe:

Nintendo will no longer offer the above-named products on Nintendo Store after mid-February 2027. Regarding availability at retail, please check with your local retailers in the future for more information. Products marked with * are only available on Nintendo Store.

What do you think of the Switch's run? Is it time to retire, or should Nintendo have squeezed a few more years out of it? Let us know in the comments below!

Just a guy with opinions video games who decided to share it with everyone against their will :P. I specifically like single-player games and card games, though usually not what's most popular at the moment.

  • The loss of the NES and SNES controllers kinda blows, but moving away from the OG Switch is a very good move. There's no reason to be putting out a highly inferior product, even if it is cheaper for people to get into. The Switch and Switch 2 naming convention hasn't been as confusing as the Wii and Wii U, or the 3DS and 3DS XL (which had the extra computing power that was used in what, two games? lol) as far as specs go, but it would be a damn shame if we saw another holiday season where people were buying "Switch" for someone who was expecting a Switch 2, especially now that we see very few games getting Switch 1 releases.

Well, good news: We're getting one more of these! Since the console is getting discontinued in February.
