Owlcat Games has pulled back the curtain on Saro, a sanctioned psyker and pyromancer companion joining Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy, revealing him alongside a brand new trailer that shows exactly how his brutal trials forged him into a weapon for the Inquisition.
If you have been following the game's currently running Closed Beta, you can already recruit him. Saro is one of ten companions available to players in the beta, and the new trailer digs into how the Inquisition is more than willing to embrace a sinner - as long as he stays useful.
Who is Saro?
In the grim darkness of the far future, being a psyker is a dangerous thing. Psykers are sensitive to the warp, which grants them powerful abilities but also makes them extremely vulnerable, since they can succumb to the powers of chaos at any moment. As Owlcat lays it out, they are either hunted down and killed or, if they are deemed useful enough, turned into tools of the Imperium.
That is exactly what happened to Saro. When his powers manifested at a young age, he underwent a rigorous and harrowing sanctioning process, and he now wields his pyromantic flames in service of the Tyrentine Cabal of the Inquisition. Even though he is deemed a sinner who will never be granted the blessed light of the God-Emperor, his iron will and fervent belief in the Imperium have helped him survive countless battles - as well as the lure of the warp itself.
How does Saro play in combat?
Saro's enormous psychic powers manifest as pyromancy, letting him incinerate his foes by creating firestorms and leaving no heretic alive. But that firepower comes at a price. Here is what to keep in mind when you send him into battle:
His powers manifest as pyromancy, allowing him to conjure firestorms that wipe out enemies.
Used excessively, those powers create disturbances in the Empyrean, calling forth warp phenomena and creatures of the warp that can make any combat situation more difficult.
His knowledge of supernatural phenomena is useful during the Inquisition's investigations.
He is not known for his physical strength, so do not expect him to soak up hits on the front line.
How can you recruit Saro?
Fans can recruit Saro right now in the current Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy Closed Beta, which is available to everyone who purchased one of the Founder's packs at darkheresy.owlcat.games.
As for the full release, Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy will launch on Windows PC (Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store) and consoles (PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S).
