Digital Extremes has pulled back the curtain on a big new batch of Soulframe content, revealing it all during its latest Soulframe Devstream broadcast live from the studio's 11th annual TennoCon community event today. The headline reveals include a corrupted progression path, a brand-new Fable quest, and Ben Starr stepping in as a menacing new antagonist as the free-to-play fantasy action RPG builds toward its wider launch this Fall.
Best of all for anyone who has been curious about jumping in, the team announced that players everywhere can grab permanent access to Soulframe Preludes by signing up on the official site by July 12 at 11:59 p.m. ET. Once that open sign-up window closes, you can still register, but you'll be waiting on the weekly raffle for future access.
What is the Warsongs Fable and the corrupted progression path?
The big new questline is Warsongs, a Fable coming later this Fall that introduces a darker path to redemption. It's tied to a new corrupted progression route via the Vadagar Pact, which lets you wield the power of the corrupting Ichor. That translates into some wonderfully nasty tools:
Toss exploding boomerangs
Call forth ensnaring tendrils
Summon a stampede of corrosive steeds that leave behind murky pools in their wake
Creative Director Geoff Crookes explained how the darker tone fits Soulframe's wider storytelling ambitions:
"Our approach to storytelling in Soulframe has focused a lot on redemption, with uplifting character arcs built around salvation and not necessarily the destruction of the human body and soul. Life has many paths toward redemption, though, and with the Warsongs Fable we're attempting to explore a smidge of that contrast to demonstrate the necessary balance and coexistence. Growth does not truly occur without a certain level of despair and fear. These are important storytelling mechanics that are incredibly relatable to the human experience and journey in life. These themes aren't comfortable to experience, but they're essential to our existence as temporary inhabitants of Alca. We hope our community, and players discovering Soulframe for the first time today, find a sense of connection with that."
Who is Tempest Bayor?
Warsongs also introduces one of the player's main rivals, Tempest Bayor, brought to life by Ben Starr - who you may know from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. A rare red-armed Envoy, Bayor aligns himself with the invading Ode forces alongside his faithful raven companion. His motivations are being kept under wraps, though the Empress of Eldveil - voiced by Jennifer English (also of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33) in her first in-game appearance - seems to know more than she's letting on.
What else was revealed?
There was plenty more packed into the Devstream, including a new boss, a fishing mini-game, and confirmation on mounts:
Mendicant Reinbreaker boss fight - This mounted menace is available in Soulframe Preludes now. Defeat him and you can free his indentured steed for the potential chance to befriend it in the future.
Fresh fishing mini-game - A new gathering activity has you fishing lakeside with Grandfather Doyen, woven directly into the game's narrative to expand Alca's worldbuilding.
Mounts coming to Preludes this year - Players will soon be able to test out the first mount system, including traversing Alca with a full-grown wolf companion, later this year.
Attendees and viewers at home could also tune into TennoLive on Warframe's Twitch or YouTube channels at 4:30 p.m. ET for the latest gameplay demo for Soulframe, including the full reveal of the Warsongs Fable.
