Shrek is lacing up his boxing gloves, everyone. Ubisoft, in collaboration with Universal Products & Experiences, has launched the Brawlhalla x DreamWorks Animation's Shrek crossover event today, dropping Shrek, Fiona, and Puss in Boots into the free-to-play fighter as playable characters, with Donkey tagging along as a Companion.

According to the announcement, the event runs through August 19, and it lands right on the 25th anniversary of the Academy Award winning original film. It also arrives ahead of DreamWorks Animation's next chapter in the franchise, with Shrek 5 set to premiere in theatres next summer.

Which Shrek characters can you play?

The crossover brings the swamp's finest into the arena, each with their own tier of Crossover skin. Here is the full lineup:

  • Shrek - The irascible but lovable hero joins as a Mythic Crossover and uses his ogre strength during battles.

  • Princess Fiona - Assertive and independent, Fiona brawls in her signature green dress as a Mythic Crossover.

  • Puss in Boots - Puss harnesses his swordsmanship, along with his suaveness and feline prowess, when facing opponents, and is available as an Epic Crossover.

  • Donkey - The ultimate enthusiastic best bud joins as a Companion and will react to the events of the battle.

What about the new maps and cosmetics?

You will get two new places to throw down, both set against Shrek's iconic swamp. There is Shrek's Swamp, a Competitive Map, and Shrek's Muddy Swamp, a Casual Map that comes with a brand-new mud hazard developed specifically for this crossover.

Beyond the maps, players can also pick up other items inspired by the unforgettable faces of Far Far Away, including a KO Effect of Mongo the giant gingerbread man, plus Emoji Skins featuring Lord Farquaad, Dragon, and Pinocchio.

Why now?

The four Shrek franchise films have earned more than $2.9 billion worldwide, spawning a global live-touring show, an award-winning Broadway musical that earned eight Tony nominations and 12 Drama Desk nominations, plus an immersive top-tourist destination in London and attractions across Universal Studios theme parks worldwide. The franchise is beloved through generations and has an incredible meme culture still to this day.

Looking ahead, DreamWorks Animation is reimagining the tale for a new generation with Shrek 5 in 2027. Stars Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy return, now joined by Emmy winning superstar Zendaya as Shrek and Fiona's daughter.

The biggest thing though? Celebrating 25 years of Shrek! The original film dropped on May 18, 2001 in the United States which is kinda wild that it's been that long. I remember seeing that in theatres.

The Brawlhalla x Shrek crossover event is live now and runs through August 19, 2026. You can play on Steam, Epic Games, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS.
