Improving your gear gives you harder hits against bosses, the ability to hurt higher level enemies, and, with plenty of additional stats, you can play different parts of the game with increases bonuses such as being able to gather and craft better.
Who Wants what Stat?
Warriors want to look for gear with Strength. The Forge is where this gear is made by using Ore which is refined into Bars.
Archers want to look for gear with Dexterity. The Tannery is where this gear is made by using Leather.
Mages want to look for gear with Intellect. The Loom is where this gear is made by using Cloth.
Crafting
One of the big ways to improve your gear is by crafting new pieces. Collecting raw materials from gathering or by defeating foes in venture is essential to pushing your professions higher.
Use the workshops to craft new gear. You can even select certain crafts as "wanted" so you can keep track of which materials you need to make the gear you want.
