Let Us Delete/Erase Threads

I know we can delete our personal posts whenever we want but can we have access to delete threads we opened? If we can't for security purposes, it's alright. The reason why I wanted is that I should delete some of my threads I opened (mostly bugs/feature threads that are resolved) to reduce the overload of this site. Heck, we should have a stick thread for this to feel OoC fresh. Also, if a thread isn't visited/commented for a year, it should be deleted automatically. I know my idea might be against some rules but in the long run, more threads/decks mean more power for server and more slowdown.

  • Realistically deleting your OP in a thread should result in the whole thread being deleted, but currently it just leaves an empty thread. As for performance, the existence of this data will have little impact if any, especially in comparison to the card database. Additionally deleted content doesn't cease to exist, it's still archived but hidden to everyone but site staff. Certainly thoughtful of you though 😄

    It is just storage really. If you think of a hard drive, it doesn't really slow down unless it reaches max capacity, is fragmented, or fails, but fortunately that is not super relevant due to how the site is hosted. Performance of the site has a lot more to do with how it processes that data and serves it which typically involves code.

  • While your intentions are noble, the example you listed is a horrible one. Deleting resolved bug report threads or requests for a feature is a pretty bad idea. Leaving it up lets ppl know that the issue has been resolved or that we may already be considering (not) adding this feature etc., and can prevent from another thread on the same topic popping up from a user who might not have noticed that. Or it can be referenced, if the problem resurfaces etc.

      Bingo. Also, it's really bad if we give someone the ability to delete a thread they created when people are actively conversing in it or have in the past. That hurts the community a ton!

      Now, what is supposed to happen though is if you delete your post in a thread and its the only post in the thread, the thread is supposed to get deleted. That isn't implemented yet though RIP.

  • I'm considering overloads OoC might face, should there be more threads and ofc I don't wish to delete a thread while a conversation is going on. It's like silencing someone by shooting the head, I'm not like that. I simply suggested that if a thread isn't active for a long time, like a year, I thought it would be erased to speed up OoC. Since Chimera mentioned threads have little impact, I'm not concerned like I used to.

  • Yeah even if Out of Cards gets overloaded, they actually have some scripts in place that unlock their overloaded web crystals, and allow the site to function properly. So no need to worry!

  • I'd be sad if threads get automatically deleted. I like to revisit older posts from time to time.

  • Storage is super cheap. Old threads, decks, comments will not slow the site down, cost next to nothing to store, and provide too much value in the future. If they every slow the site down, we've done something seriously bad and should rethink running websites.

    If you look at a site like reddit, it's proven you can run sites with stupid numbers of traffic. Although it would be wicked to be that size, I don't think we're going to have a billion unique visitors a month, ever. Soooooo cool though.

    So while it may be a noble idea to help keep the place clean and fast, we'd actually much prefer keeping all the data.

  • A bit off topic but it'd be nice if closed/locked threads had some sort of visual cue in the thread list to distinguish them from active threads.
