Why is this website not as active as Hearthpwn?

Submitted 4 years ago by

Decks on Hearthpwn get like 50+ upvotes but on here it's a miracle for 10.

Why aren't there that many people here and how can we get more?

Create deck guides, post them on the internet and spread the word!

It's tough to compete with a site that has had a presence for 7 years, and when you spent most of those years making it the go-to place. It is hard to get people to go anywhere else since it is ingrained in their mind that's where they need to go for decks.

Plus, HP is filled with vote manipulation and always has been. We used to do an okay job at combating it but I would not be surprised if the new people never bother to look for it since all they care about at the end of the day is people clicking around on the site.

...Also: don't forget to look for and upvote cool decks yourself. O:-) The more people chipping in, the more meaningful the whole rating system is.

Regarding the forums, I'd also like to add the good old "quality over quantity" argument. Hearthpwn is 90% shitposts, if you pardon my French.

I notice I am confused. Something I believe isn't true. How do I know what I think I know?

HP didn't do an oozefest did they? They only focus on Hearthstone when OoC does multiple card games. You can also see all the love and care that goes into OoC, that's why I moved sites. I barely look at HP these days.

Just keep doing what you're doing Flux and co, the ppl that matter notice the site, like how Blizzard sent Flux those awesome Scholomance gifts

Quality over quantity was already mentioned above. Let me put it this way: HP is like junk food, it gets you filled but not satisfied, wheras OoC is like Fine Dining, which is made with love and you can enjoy it around pleasant people. I used to read HP previously, but the overall climate was not that nice (although I am sure the mods did their best to prevent the worst stuff). So I transferred once I learned that there was some other site. That said I am sure that OoC will grow, over the long-term quality will prevail especially as this site is more diversified.

Addition: To answer the question why HP is more popular (despite its relative shortcomings): It is simply longer around and already entrenched (in business you call this first mover advantage); people know it and stick to it

English is not my native language, so please excuse occasional mistakes

I can't speak much for Hearthpwn, as I always refrained from using it much beyond card reveals as it was slow as shit, but I do have some things why I think that the engagement with decks is lower here.

The first is that, as somebody who posts decks quite regularly, I often don't get notifications when somebody leaves a comment. This leads to me missing comments on my decks and to people who leave comments feeling that their feedback doesn't get listened to, sometimes because the creator didn't get a notification and sometimes because the commenter didn't get a notification of the creator's reply. This causes people to post fewer decks because they think nobody cares about them, and people to comment less on decks because they think nobody reads their comments anyway.

Another thing that I think might help is a more personalised deck feed. Right now, if I go to the homepage, I might see decks for wild (which I don't play), duels (which a lot of people don't have access too yet) and for classes I don't play. If this feed was catered to me more, either through algorithmic learning or, probably easier to implement, personally customised settings, I would be more inclined to engage with the decks. Give me the option to only see standard Hearthstone decks, and I'll be far more inclined to look at the decks than when I see a bunch of Runeterra, wild and duels decks.

The third is article-decks mixing in with the "regular" decks, but the discussion staying separate. For instance, yesterday the admins published an article on the fastest decks in standard. The comments on this article might lead to an interesting discussion. However, these decks also show up in the deck feed, where a separate discussion might take place. I'm not sure how, but it would be nice if these two were linked somehow, so that I don't need to figure out myself which of the two links I need to click to figure out where the best discussion is found.

Lastly, I would like more incentives for discussing decks. Every expansion release cycle you guys do a great job in incentivising users to discuss the newly revealed cards, with titles and stuff. I think if you would add similar incentives to regularly voting and commenting on decks, that would drive up engagement with them. Even if just one person is incentivised through this to comment on a deck, that would lead to more people commenting as a result, since people are more likely to comment on a deck on which already has been commented. The precise implementation of these incentives I do not have a developed idea for though.

I think anyone with any sense can see how much better Out of Cards is than Hearthpwn. This is a very active community in terms of card discussions, special events, and just people hanging out talking about the games they love (and being cool about it).

That said, I do wish there was more action in the deck-building area. Like Flux and OldManSanns said above, if more people post and comment on decks, then there will be more activity. The problem is, it's discouraging to put effort into a deck and guide and then have it fade away with little or no interaction. I still comment on decks sometimes, but I haven't posted a new one in quite awhile because of this. I think Erodos has some neat ideas about improving the way we see content, but I'll leave it to the experts to figure our how best to implement them.

Its 50% shitpost, and another 49% sarcastic replies to shitposts. The last 1% are replies from sensible people that don't know outofcards exists.

I jumped ship over here as soon as it started, and I enjoy it much better. The community here is more tightknit people know each other. Whereas on HP it's more like reddit. Where dissenting opinions go to die and there is no free thought allowed.

    Living like that.

It would be cool if you could earn the new currency by voting on a commenting on decks. I don't know exactly how this new gold system is going to work, but it would be cool if once a week we had a sort of "quest" to comment on at least one deck and vote on at least 3. Really, the best way for the decks on this site to get more attention is for us to simply give them more attention.
