The Blacklist - A place to point out toxic people

Submitted 3 years, 10 months ago by

Welcome to The Blacklist!

I thought about this thread for a long long time, and given you can ignore friend requests, and you can report users in the launcher for harassment, but there are a lot of salty people out there, that can send you a request after a relatively normal game and then start to harass you endlessly until you kick them out or they just go away after driving you a little insane and they just get bored out.

So, this would be the place where you could preemptively get an idea of WHO are you adding.

The idea is to give a name and the reason you're pointing it out, maybe a screenshot if you managed to take one.

I'll update this post to add names, and call out why they show up here.

For me this is a hard no. This thread can create indirect, targeted harassment.

I get that no one enjoys winning or losing a game just to have a salt lick of a human being add you just to talk shit. I don’t think that any respectable person should engage in activities such as this because all this does is put their name on a list they they can’t get rid of. What if one day the dude you listed changes how he conducts himself

Just remove them from your friends list and move on with your day.

Nope, I don't think this is a good idea either. Ethically, I'm with griffior which is the most important point.

I also think this wouldn't work very well. With 23 million people playing HS chances are VERY low one of us plays against the same opponent AND gets targeted by their bm AND bothers to look here before accepting a request.

I notice I am confused. Something I believe isn't true. How do I know what I think I know?

While I get it, and I worry about targeted harassment against people pointed out, they have here a place to retort if they want and feel wronged (normally people like this don't or cry out against hard evidence...)

Too many times I've been harassed not just in game, but in real life, and having the chance of knowing that X person would try to approach me with a friend request to drive me crazy, I would never have added them in the first place.

I get that preemptive denial is a bad thing, but a lot of the times a person that harass anyone for no motive but saltiness or personal problems IRL, keeps on harassing non stop for long periods of time. And yeah, they could be good with their friends, good to a lot of people, but at the end of the day, being good to everyone, and then bully a person just for the sake of it, yeah, THAT's a hard no for me.

"Courts have defined harassment as it is commonly understood: repeated words, conduct, or action that serve no legitimate purpose and are directed at a specific person to annoy, alarm, or distress that person." (criminaldefenselawyer.com)

This behavior can only be "repeated" if you let it. The moment someone you added starts flaming you, just unfriend them. Or, if you're really concerned about this type of thing, just don't accept friend requests.

I've had this happen several times (I'm sure we all have), and ultimately, it's just sad that people feel the need to do this to strangers, and over a game no less. But it's just words from some anonymous loser on the internet. Ignore it and move on.

Your shame list, while clearly well-intentioned, is not a good idea.

While it's good to set the blacklist, I don't agree pointing someone bad for any reason. The idea could be misleading when you add someone just because you don't like the way they play, or for any simple nonsense reason.

I guess you could set it for another purpose, like someone cheating out the Play a Friend Quest.

Just like Hearthpwn, and they have more refined list. But it's not too late to start another list, new site attracts new players (sort of) or somehow merged it with Hearthpwn? (Flux?) You decide.

Firstly there are may be many players named GustVx

Secondly, whilst I appreciate it is annoying (or amusing depending on your outlook) to have people be rude following a friend request, such a thread would a) likely not work due to a playerbase of millions and b) be open to abuse.

It won't fit the more considered/grown up approach OOC takes.  Maybe try HPWN? :P

    All generalizations are false.

Ok, while I get that this won't be coming to a good end (at least what I thought of a good end), and I understand that having lists it's not great for anyone, I will let it rest for a day and keep on gathering feedback, then decide if this is worth keeping or deleting.

I just want to point out, that the main idea would be to prevent people of even getting any bullying in game, and although it's kind of impossible to prevent it having somewhere with a "heads up" or any kind of warning about certain people that are toxic.

But anyways... At least I tried.

Do you really expect random trolls to come to a small community website to defend themselves? Like.... come on.

Not every interaction you have in life is going to go the way you want/expect it to, you have to roll with the punches man.

People don't have to have a motive or reason to be pricks, it's part of being human. If they want to bully others that's them, the best thing you can do for your mental health is ignore them.

No worries mate - I think it's pretty obvious it was coming from a good place.

I do think particularly toxic behavior from players should be subject to consequences - wishing death upon you or your family, or racist, homophobic etc slurs shouldn't be tolerated in the game and there's little avenue to report or any action taken if you do.

It's a failing of Blizzard customer service/design on the social element of the game sadly.

I've gotten the above types of messages from people.  But overwhelmingly I've had positive interactions with friends (100+) win or lose.  I always take it as a good sign if the opponent emotes Well Played when they lose and let you take lethal.  (this is without me emoting at all beforehand).  Those kinda people tend to be a good bet to add to your friends list and worth having in it.

Or if I lose to an interesting deck sometimes I'll add a friend and if they accept first thing I do it say WP and ask how the deck is doing in the meta, chat a bit, and end with wishing them luck in their games.

    All generalizations are false.

Don't want to sound rude, but that's a stupid, naive idea. I mean, you do know that something like this can easily be misused? Just report it to Blizz and they'll take care of it, no need for a Witchhunt.

^ I honestly think that this way of viewing things/attitude is much more toxic than random insults. Absolute thinking and big generalizations can be very unhealthy for a community.

It's not illegal for people to be a dick online, and it's not your job to police them.
