Paper Magic

Does anyone here play Magic in real life outside of Arena? If so what formats do you play? I've been looking for a place to talk about older formats and drafts since the shutdown of MTGSalvation, and I'm already on this site for the HS content.

I play a lot of drafts and play some commander format :)
im pretty exclusive to modern mostly with some pauper and limited.
I play only paper magic. Haven't gotten into Arena yet. I play mostly sealed and draft when I play. I haven't played much lately because of kids but my oldest can read now so I will start teaching him to play magic soon. For constructed formats I like legacy and commander mostly. Dabbled a little in modern but never really got into it. Legacy is just so much more wild and fun for me.

Those are probably my 2 most played formats right now as well! Have you had the oppurtunity to draft Modern Horizons yet? I just did at a prerelease and it may be my favorite draft set to date

What deck in modern? I've been playing Martyr Proc for a few years now, but am looking to switch out to something els

I've only ever played Legacy in proxy form, can't afford the real thing quite yet. I've been enjoying Bomberman Combo with Auriok Salvagers and LED. What do you play in the format?

i have multiple decks. Burn, Bant Spirits, Mardu Pyromancer, id say my personal favorite is Grixis Death's Shadow which might switch to Esper thanks to Ranger Captain of Eos.
I play modern, standard, and occasionally draft. I play Grixis Death's Shadow in modern (if that wasn't obvious from my avatar), and some UW nill jank in standard.
And yes, I did draft MH1 yesterday! It was great, I drafted dimir ninjas and went 3-0, and pulling a foil Serra from my rewards packs! It was a blast, this is certainly one of my favorite limited formats.
Edit: I also play Temur Reclamation on Arena whenever I get free time, which isn't often because of school. (And finals are in a few days, so there won't be much magic for a while xD)
I hadn't thought of Ranger Captain in Death's Shadow. Definitely seems interesting!

Haven't really played in like 10 years. I stopped shortly after the first Ravnica expansion. Still have all my cards though, some p9, full playset duals, etc.
My brother tried to force ninjas super hard with little to no success, glad you got success out of it though! I've drafted twice and cracked an Astral Drift both times went 2-1 the first time and 1-1 before dropping due to time restraints. First time was Esper and the second was Jeskai with Tectonic Reformation
Also, Good luck with finals!

So have you reached the point where you are sitting on the duals and P9 and treating them more like an investment?

Nice! I had honestly not expected for [Hearthstone Card (Astral Drift) Not Found] to be good at all, especially in limited. What were your payoffs?
And about the ninjas, I got somewhat lucky to find two of the unblockable changelings, as well as a 1 Mana flier with scry 2 (name is escaping me), in addition to a [Hearthstone Card (Ingenious Infiltrator) Not Found], which closed out games really fast. Also, I got a Defile, which was excellent, and a decent counter spell suite in two [Hearthstone Card (Spell Snuff) Not Found]s. If I had to describe it, I'd say it was sort of a 'tempo deck with card advantage'. It was pretty busted!
My go to deck for a really long time in legacy has been BUG Delver. The only cards I am really missing that would make it optimal are the 'goyfs and JTMS. I have the cards and contemplated RUG Delver too. I also would like to build Death and Taxes if I can get the Karakas. For modern I had Karn Tron built but I am way behind the times on that deck and suspect it needs a complete overhaul. I imagine my BUG/RUG Delver decks need some minor tweaking. 'goyf seems to finally be getting to a low enough price point that I can pick up a playset soon.

Welcome to the thunder-dome bitch!
The Esper version I was essentially flickering Man o' Wars to remove blockers as my Faerie Seers and Bazaar Trademage went upstairs for damage. I was also flickering a Plague Engineer to beat on whichever tribe they had on the battlefield at the time, In my second round I switched between Goblins, Zombies and Ninjas to slow down my opponent.
The Jeskai Version was a lot faster, I spent the time cycling things to flicker Irregular Cohort to go super wide and finish with Cleaving Sliver. I had also drafted a Serra as a sort of insurance policy. I drew almost my entire deck every game with this build.

I think Delver and Karn Tron have stayed pretty close to their core for a while now so I don't think they would need much updating. And I can tell you that once you pull the trigger on Goyfs nothing feels better, I bought a playset a few years ago for use in Jund when it was popular and I still don't regret it

Yeah I am darn close to getting a play set. They don't go out of style. I just have to figure out if I have enough newer cards to sell to make it work. That is certainly a smaller barrier at this point than the damn dual lands. Glad I have those left over from when I started playing as a kid.

I wish I had duals, they are the only thing keeping me out of the Legacy Format in sanctioned competition. I'll have to just stick with the proxy's for now and enjoy the format with friends in my basement

Partly that, partly sentimentality.
I used to play Paper MtG a lot back the day - I have a fairly extensive collection, though pretty out of date these days buy a good number of years.
Unfortunately, life and having a family kind of took the place of going to Magic evenings at the local Games Workshop store etc, so I don't get that oppotunity any more.
Having it online solved that problem for us parent-y types ;-)
I love playing tabletop Magic. I play Standard and Draft at my friendly local game store, I haven't been playing long enough to have the right collection for Modern, and Commander is too much for me. Draft/Sealed are probably my favorites because you get to open the most packs. I have been playing paper Magic for almost 2 years and I have been playing Arena since beta. And I have to say, paper Magic is a lot more fun.

I definitely think that draft is the best way to play Magic, it always feels the most 'authentic' to me. I'd say Commander is a close second, it can be daunting when getting decks to ready to play against people at your LGS with high powered decks but if you're into having fun I can't recommend playing Group Hug or Chaos Strategies enough. These strategies can have huge impacts on the playgroup but are relatively affordable since your playing a pile of cards that nobody would want to play in a competitive format.

I don't really like commander very much. It is to complicated, I tried it with some pre-built decks and it did not go well. there were so many triggers and things to keep track of, and that was just one-on-one. usually commander is played with 3-5 people, I just don't understand how you can keep track of it all.

Ah, gotcha. It is relatively complicated to keep track of everything, it takes a lot of practice. I also would like to chime in and mention that playing commander 1v1 does a pretty poor job of highlighting the cool possibilities of the format, a lot of the more interesting (and complicated) things come up when playing in the 4 man group.
The complicated board states are my favorite part of the game but I can understand how they may turn some people off

This is why I kept all my cards when I stopped playing as a kid and I was damn glad because I picked it back up again later. All my friends who used to play when we were kids that sold their collections were super sore about it when we started playing again after college. My philosophy now is to keep any cards that will not be reprinted or that I cannot easily obtain again if I wanted to play

Hey!!
Former physical card player here. Haven't played since the regional back in 2001. Started back during Urza's block. I sometimes miss the game, but have pretty much settled into Hearthstone now.

I know paper magic but it's been a long time. I do that to the kids because they are easy to believe haha
