Favorite Cards by Rarity

Submitted 4 years, 8 months ago by

We're kind of in a down-time between Reveal Season and a new expansion coming out, so while we wait for Tuesday I thought I'd ask a question: what are your favorite Hearthstone cards by rarity? This came up in a conversation with my father, and turns out going through the list was harder than I expected.

To start things off, here are mine:

  • Basic - Frostbolt
  • Common - Jade Spirit. I've had a lot of fun playing Jade decks; I like their inevitable nature, growing bigger threats.
  • Rare - Stonehill Defender. Taunt is my favorite Keyword, and he's a staple of Quest Taunt Warrior (my favorite deck).
  • Epic - Scion of Ruin. Dragons are my favorite minion type, and summoning three guys with Rush is great.
  • Legendary - Fire Plume's Heart. It's got to be; sorry, Frost Lich Jaina. You know I love you too.

I assume all cards are fair game here, although you're welcome to do Standard-only if you want.

Basic : Animal Companion. Forgot about basic LOL

Common : Time Out!, better than DH's Blur because it protects you even on enemy turn.

    Rare : Defile

    Epic : Ice Block

    Legendary : Zilliax

basically, if hero immunity get printed more, I would definitely chose that.

    Basic - Goldshire Footman. :D

Common - Silver Hand Regent. Everyone can be paladin for a day! And the card art is amazing.

Rare - Zandalari Templar. I like the golden animation

Epic - Fal'dorei Strider. Best Rogue card ever printed to me!

Legendary - Patches the Pirate because he is so cool! Too bad he is longer in charge ;(

I agree haha. I don't generally care for the Rogue, but I do like me some shuffle shenanigans.

You ask tough questions, it was hard to come up with anything proper for some rarities:

    • Basic - No strong feelings about any card tbh. Rarely sad to see Polymorph in my hand though, and Acidic Swamp Ooze is always a nice tech.
    • Common - Another really tough one. I always enjoyed a T3 Twilight Elder during Old Gods era, and Rumbling Elemental brings back memories of the good old Battlecry Shaman from time before Shudderwock. As a control elitist I also like Restless Mummy, versatile and balanced.
    • Rare - I'm gonna take the risk of forgetting a Rare I really like and copypasta Defile as my answer. Such an elegant anti-aggro tool.
    • Epic - Continuing with Control Warlock, I'll say Twisting Nether. Plague of Death is even better as a board clear but for some reason I don't like it as much. Maybe it's because Zephrys gives Nether when the situation get sticky. As a person who likes to overtech his decks against everything I have to give an honorary mention to Skulking Geist.
    • Legendary - Frost Lich Jaina. Easy. Shame on you link for not picking her. C'Thun deserves an honorary mention though.

Basic: Reckless Rocketeer  its kind of like Leeroy but better because it's a goblin on a rocket.

Common: Noble Sacrifice 10/10 sound effect right here

Rare: Togwaggle's Scheme I've always loved shuffle effects

Epic: Gnomeferatu I uh like milling cards yeah.

Legendary: Bandersmosh Hi'reek memes and playing dragon queen on turn 5 great meme times you really cant go wrong with the smosh

    Self proclaimed good at battlegrounds

    • Basic - Tracking. This card is powerful, fun, and a very handy tool for hunters.
    • Common - This is a tough decision to make. But I think my favorite is Kobold Librarian because every warlock deck I have ever built since this card came out has included him.
    • Rare - Either Evolve or Devolve. I like Evolve because of how fun it is to play, but I also like Devolve because of how efficiently is can destroy your opponents synergy.
    • Epic - Doomsayer, a handy neutral board clear that requires some timing to get just right.
    • Legendary - This is tough. There are the really powerful, build around cards like Shudderwock and Bloodreaver Gul'dan. There are those iconic characters like Ragnaros the Firelord or Deathwing. And there are also other cards which just tickle my fancy like Deathstalker Rexxar, [Hearthstone Card (Zola Gorgon) Not Found], or Lorewalker Cho. I really can't decide on a favorite Legendary without remembering another Legendary which I like just as much.

    Carrion, my wayward grub.

Basic: Polymorph: Nice removal, reliable and helpfull against a number of decks. (Mainly Ress priest).

Common: Hallucination: Oh i miss this card in standard... We kinda got [Hearthstone Card (Pilver) Not Found] and Dragon's Hoard to replace it, but i still miss it in stanard. At least it's still good in wild thief rogue.

Rare: Spirit of the Shark: Was only played a bit in ROS battlecry Lacky Rogue, but it's still my favorite card from RA. Also in wild it's rogues "Budget" version of Brann Bronzebeard.

Epic!: Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron: Powerfull card, worth the 10 mana, and ALWAYS Lethal. (You never know for who it's going to be lethal). Also i find it funny how this was an UPGRADE to Yogg-Saron, Hope's End for quite a bit. Thank goodness they unnerfed yogg. (Gnomeferatu get's close second tho)

WOAH! LEGENDARY: The Amazing Reno, Zephrys the Great, Face Collector, Bazaar Burglary AND EVEN Yogg-Saron, Hope's End... i'm sorry. But i gotta stick to the one... The one... THE ONLY... Tess Greymane! Tess was the card that managed to hook me onto the thief/burgle rogue archetype and everything you do in that deck is just prepping for this one card. And when you unleash her (And put like 10 copies in your deck with Togwaggle's Scheme) It just gives such an.. indiscribable feeling. It just feels sooo good. Even better than yogg! (Mainly because you have a lot more control over what get's played)

RNG is only fun as long as there is a 50/50 chance of getting something really good or trash level of bad. If RNG always results in something good, then it's not fun.

    • Basic: Sen'jin Shieldmasta - Taz'dingo! I used him a lot in my beginner decks. It trades oh so well with basically all 1-2-3 cost minions. And very memorable voiceline.
    • Common: Explosive Trap! While many may consider it as Face Hunter cancer, I really like its inevitability. It's so satisfying to drop it against an opponent with only 1-2 health minions. Even if they can't see it which Secret is it, they can feel it. Meanwhile I'm like "Come on! Attack! You're an Aggro deck, why don't you go face? Oh, you're afraid of losing your precious board? Well, there's nothing else you can do right now! Go on, I swear it's just Freezing Trap, don't worry!"
    • Also Common: Tar Creeper: same as Sen'jin Shieldmasta, but 1 mana cheaper! It used to be such a game changer back in the Year of the Mammoth. I miss it. It kept Prince Keleseth tempo decks somewhat in check.
    • Rare: Lesser Amethyst Spellstone It gives a large swing when fully upgraded that was very satisfying, especially after a Hooked Reaver. I really liked to play Warlock in Kobolds and Catacombs. (Not Cubelock, I couldn't afford that deck. Just some kind of self-damage new player jank. It was pretty successful though.)
    • Epic: Libram of Hope isn't released yet, bu I've already fallen in love with it. It fulfills my dream deck of a Control Paladin with heals, taunts, and a consistent game plan.
    • Legendary: Tirion Fordring! Crafted him in Golden, became broke, but it was worth it. Simply glorious. Put your faith in the Light!
    • My other Golden Legendary: Whizbang the Wonderful - Playing full golden decks is a dream I could never achieve without Whizbang. Whenever a new expansion comes out, instead of risky Day 1 crafts, Whizbang gives me all the decks I need.

Honorable mentions: Unstable Evolution, Renounce Darkness, Deathwing, Mad Aspect (for the best entrance music)

As you can see, I really like good anti-Aggro tools. I don't hate that archetype, the only reason is that these give the most "Whew, I'm saved!" moments.

Put your faith in the Light!

Basic: Whirlwind - look at that golden animation. Also it's fun to go swoosh

Common: North Sea Kraken - sounds like a kaiju, looks like a kaiju, can go face, it's perfect

Rare: Darkshire Librarian - Discard Support and waifu

Epic: Cannon Barrage - pulling this off with a full board = pp very hard

Legendary: Princess Huhuran - just look at the entrance animation....also waifu (don't judge me)

    I tried having fun once.

    It was awful.

Demons, giant bug ladies, and librarians? You have some strange tastes, but I'm not one to judge, and of course, that animation is quite nice too bad she was power crept so painfully

The really sad part is that Un'Goro wasn't even that long after Whispers of the Old Gods; just a short year later.

    I'm sorry :(

C'Thun is pretty high on my list, as well; I don't know why I love it so.

[Hearthstone Card (Basic) Not Found] - Animal Companion, the ever reliable Hunter card.

[Hearthstone Card (Common) Not Found] - Eternium Rover. Being a Warrior main, this card has been an auto-include in decks for as long as I can remember. I'll miss it once it's gone from standard.

[Hearthstone Card (Rare) Not Found] - Dyn-o-matic, unique removal for Warrior. I like that it's not a simple board clear, that you actually had to set up the board state to maximize the effect.

[Hearthstone Card (Epic) Not Found] - Corpsetaker, such a unique design for a card. It was always annoying whenever you drew one of the keywords before you could play her, but when you pull it off, it's always satisfying. Honorable mention to Supercollider, just a fun weapon to play and strategize against.

Legendary - Sunkeeper Tarim, the ultimate equalizer. There was almost never a bad time to play him. Also the first legendary I ever crafted, so he has a special place in my heart.
