  • Dean Ayala's Community Q&A #2 - More New Modes Confirmed, Profiles, Mini Sets, Arena, Wild, and More!

IMO Tickatus and Y'Shaarj, the Defiler is a real problem.  I'm playing at Platinum 5 ranks. about 50% of my games this week have involved 10 of my cards getting burned and there is NOTHING that I can do about it.  It is not fun since I mostly like to play midrange and slower decks.  I even thought that playing reno to make him disappear might help but remembered that Y'shaarj doesn't care about deaths.. only if a corrupt card was played. Something with the way these 2 interact needs to be changed whether the cost of Tickatus, the amount of cards it burns or the cost of the corrupt cards that are added back to hand by Y'shaarj.  I just see this growing more and more prevalent, particularly after rotation, i predict this will be the most powerful way to play by default.

  • New Demon Hunter Spell - Illidari Studies

This will be a very powerful card. Not only does it disccover one of the core mechanics of the class, but it immediately enables it (the card will appear in the right hand outcast slot) and it discounts it. DH continually gets powerful cards.

  • Libram of Judgment

Sure, but since it's a libram it gets discounted by the Aldor Attendant and Aldor Truthseeker, it'll be easy to make it corrupted. Plus it's removal + life gain, so I'm sure it'll see some play.

That's not what I want to see in Wild. Stop assuming your opinion is universal just because you found a community that agrees with you.

  • The Story of Rexxar: The Missing Pages of Book of Heroes

Thanks for bringing this up on main page, otherwise I´d miss it. Cool recap Goliath, interesting as always :) Now I love my main class even more.

Uhhh... Blizzard doesn't need to "work with" anyone who has objective data - they run the servers. They have WAY more data than any of the third-party sites. You should perhaps consider that the data on those sites is biased in favor of the players who supply it to them. They don't actually have fully "objective" data - that data is all exclusively owned by Blizzard.

Personally, I enjoy Reno mirror matches, so asking for a nerf (and what nerf are you even proposing to fix this?) harms my fun in favor of your fun. How is Blizzard supposed to decide whose fun is more important?

  • Wild D5 to Legend

I would recommend using a Renolock with tech for both reno priest and secret mage.  It worked very well for me this season against both of those decks for ranked in diamond.

  • Dean Ayala Could See Hearthstone's Arena With Skill-Based Matchmaking - Is It Right For The Game?

Say goodbye to 7+ wins if they ever implement this. Arena should be about adapting and keeeping general skill sharp, both in deckbuilding and playing, which in turn rewards you. Adding mmr to it would kill the rewarding part, as your results will mainly come from draft luck.

The main issue I'm having with Arena lately is how heavily rng and card generation warped it, which brings so much frustration. I remember times when I could get a rogue deck with trash draft to high wins just with good gameplan and plays, since power level was so much lower, resources/power plays limited. Those runs and games were my most fun memories, and today I almost don't play at all.

  • Conjure Mana Biscuit

you are right didn't notice it. still seems pretty good to have the option of 2 extra mana when you want

  • Libram of Judgment

I mean i could always be wrong it's just a prediction, but libram gives you the instant heal + a body on board. This one needs to activate corrupt and even then you don't really get anything on board for it

  • Some advice for the new mini-expansion bundle

After looking around forums and youtube videos I see that many of the players plan to buy the expansion directly with the 2000 gold. I was initially against it because I think none of the legendaries will see consistent enough play, but I believe you will get more dust overall by buying it instead of just buying 20 packs of darkmoon faire.

However there is something very important I think players should do, and that is opening all those packs you saved first. If the game works as it should, the no duplicate rule will not happen if you already have the cards, so you'll probably end up getting around *4 of all the commons and some extra rares. This is pretty important because I believe some of those common and rare cards are potential cards to be hit by nerfs.

Arbor Up , [Hearthstone Card (Libram of Judgement) Not Found], Hysteria(it creates a 7-turn kill combo in wild, a nerf like this has happened before), ALL of the rogue cards are pretty powerful, and Backfire are some of the most dangerous cards of the expansion. You can even add some others to the list even though I would disagree with it.

So TLDR: Open packs from DMF first before buying the mini-expansion, it will probably give you some extra dust.

EDIT: Just now I saw some comments in another thread about how you could risk getting a duplicate legendary by following this method, and I agree to an extent, I think your decision should depend on what legendaries you want from this set. If you still have a legendary from the basic Darkmoon Faire collection you want then maybe you don't want to open packs first. You can consider it if you got a legendary recently too, as the chances are lower.

      • They like cards that have a low power level but can have some devastating effects. (Tickatus)
      • If Mindrender Illucia is the top card in the meta, they've screwed up at the power level aspect of fun.

This makes little sense to me. I disagree that Tickatus has a low power level.  The only reason it's low is because the meta (i.e. the game health/status dicated by players) is currently aggro oriented preventing tickatus from being a top tier deck.  If for whatever reason the meta shifted to control, Tickatus would undoubtedly be the #1 deck.  Technically IT ALREADY WAS.  For a period of 1-2 weeks prior to the latest VS report, Galakrond warlock was a top tier deck (which included tickatus).  Yes, the people running Y'shaarj Tickatus were super greedy and no-one runs that anymore.  But Galakrond warlock was still super strong, included Tickatus (purely as an instant iWin card against other control decks) but could hold it's own against some of the meta aggro/tempo decks.

Also, don't understand the comment regarding Illucia.  Are they saying that if Illucia ever became top tier, then they screwed up her design?  So she is intentionally awkward to use/badly designed so she isn't powerful?  Because that's what it sounds like they are saying.  That's EXTREMLY disheartening to hear from a player perspective:  "Hi we created a card that looks powerful, but really isn't.  To trick you into using it in your decks.  Ha ha, having fun yet?  Guess what if this ever becomes too powerful we'll nerf it, so enjoy your meme deck!".

That's NOT what a playerbase wants, to have cards designed by developers who are intentionally tricking players into using or crafting that card.

If you don't understand something, then the first thing you should do is to read the full answer:

Illucia is mean. I've answered questions like this previously but it's just finding a balance. Some people literally play Hearthstone to cackle and do mean things like Illucia or Tickatus. We make those cards for them. (Source)

The hope is that the niche of players who absolutely love that stuff can do it, but it's a low enough power level that it's not taking over all of Hearthstone. I think the world where Illucia is the best card in Hearthstone is a world we've messed up. (Source)

  • Dean Ayala Could See Hearthstone's Arena With Skill-Based Matchmaking - Is It Right For The Game?

Arena is my favorite mode - and I'm mediocre at it! It's always refreshing finding different decks to play with and against, with different cards, ones that we don't see in constructed. But the mode needs a big change, it has been stalled for a long time. I don't know what could attract players or even make it better though. I also don't know how it could be more interesting from the point of view of rewards while being properly monetized by Blizzard.

  • Wild D5 to Legend

Hi, so first of all just got back from 2 years break, account was hacked but restored, with my collection 80% gone...anyway had dust for rogue so went with Kingsbane and mecha'thun looked fun (which actually took me to diamond 10 then KB to 5)  but other than rank 3 I can't get farther.

Secret mages all over can't really work around them at all and priests....depends on drawing a sap or not......sad thing i created a mech sham for fun , took me to d4 , disco lock half complete d3 , but idk, it's been 3 days straight i got fed up now..

old time wild player, rank 2 in old system but gave up that time due to work and because it's killing the fun of the game so went with maly lock back then lol but still was more variety in meta than now.

  • Hearthstone Duels Is Getting 10 New Hero Powers, 25 Signature Treasures (Including Dual-Class), and 6 New Regular Treasures

It's likely that you have an disadvantage tho, 'cause you have less cards to choose and also you could build an other archetype with the new cards, get other treasure, hero powers... and so on. :/

  • Hearthstone Duels Is Getting 10 New Hero Powers, 25 Signature Treasures (Including Dual-Class), and 6 New Regular Treasures

I hope this patch changes something regarding the power level of some hero powers and especially the treasures. Also, I hope there are more changes coming soon. It's so frustrating having to play with much weaker hero powers and treasures against the ridiculously strong ones. Extremely frustrating. Feels like you just have to give away your resources you need for the run to the other player. And on top of that, the numbers are way too high... 12 legendary, 125 and 150 different cards is a bit heavy... Duels is probably the premium mode then...

    • Dean doesn't think they should make so many changes that players won't want to build new decks. "Blizzard will just change it soon anyway".

Said no-one ever.  Literally if there's one thing I constantly see is that Blizzard takes far too long to actually make adjustments to cards that are problematic.  Legends of Runeterra is not shy on making balance updates, don't know why Blizzard thinks they are "above" making balance changes.  Yes, they were quick to nerf some DH cards last year, but then they take forever to made adjustments to other problematic cards.

Don't even get me started on the mentality of the playerbase when they DO decided to nerf cards though...

Blizzard: We nerfed cards X,Y,Z to be more fair.

Playerbase:  *Flips table*.  Guess these cards are trash, even though they were fairly balanced.  I can't use X,Y, or Z cards cause they cost 1 more mana now!  Better stop playing this deck immediately, and switch to another deck instead of TRYING to adapt to the newly balanced cards powerlevel.

4 legendaries for the price of 20 packs in gold seems like a steal to me.

Absolutely.  Also worth noting that while could get all the commons/rares of the mini-set from packs, that's also dust you are missing out on from duplicates (some golden if lucky) you'd otherwise get.

Not huge maybe but my dust total will be grateful :)

  • Blizzard is Exploring Adding More Complete Player Profiles to Hearthstone

    Quote From Me0203

It's the obvious first step towards getting the casual player excited about competitive Hearthstone,

These two things are generally mutually exclusive.  By definition casual players don't generally want to play competitively.  Yes, occasionally someone gets better, gets more vested in the game, or wants to improve and they become competitive but making this analogy is like saying:

"This is the first obvious step towards getting WC3 Custom Map players excited about Tournament WC3 mode."

Generally speaking people who play custom wc3 maps want nothing to do with ladder/tournament mode.  Please don't cite the oddball example.

To put it yet ANOTHER way...

Spikes generally don't want to compete against Timmy, and Timmy doesn't want to compete against Spikes.  They are fundamentally at odds with their goals in the game.

  • Dean Ayala Could See Hearthstone's Arena With Skill-Based Matchmaking - Is It Right For The Game?

The problem is they've diluted the arena playerbase with duels.  Duels and arena are very similar.  (anyone who claims otherwise is ....well needs to re-evaluate).  They both have 'draft' similar styles.  They both provide performance based rewards (more wins=more rewards).  The difference is that arena is purely random draft with single draft cards.  Duels is semi-crafted with bucket rewards after every game and imbalanced treasures.

Both systems have their flaws.  I feel like arena would do better with the bucket draft system from the start (no starter deck like duels though).  And I feel like duels would do better by I dunno. limiting the starter deck?  Duels seems insanely hard to balance, and they dont appear to be providing the mode with much love at the moment.

  • I highly recommend against buying the mini xpac..

Looking at the HSReplays data, Glide has an overall "win-rate when played" of 33%, rising to only 35% against the slow decks the card is meant to punish. Most of the decks running the card don't run Skull of Gul'dan, because of the negative synergy - so the observation that SoG is the "only reason" Glide doesn't see play doesn't make a lot of sense.

In practice, the card is a lot like a 4-mana Secret Passage - but note that 1-mana Secret Passage current has only a 50% "win-rate when played." The potential upside of screwing a slow opponent also has to be measured against the potential downside of allowing a fast opponent to refill their hand (without first having to spend 4-mana.) It's also a fairly expensive Outcast card - SoG mitigates its higher cost by reducing the cost of the cards it draws, so you often do something the turn you play it, even if you cast SoG on curve. Glide just clogs up the hand - the kind of deck that wants to abuse Glide isn't the kind of deck that also wants to pass on turn four.

  • Dean Ayala Could See Hearthstone's Arena With Skill-Based Matchmaking - Is It Right For The Game?

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Arena is mostly skill-based already as bad players have stopped playing. I have never understood why people are so afraid of losing gold in Arena. Even at 0 wins, you get a pack and 10-15 extra gold or dust back. Yes, that is a net loss, but hopefully, you learned something during your run such that you can do better next time. As soon as you average 2 wins (which implies you also win 4 occasionally) it's already a better investment than spending it directly on packs. And if you keep playing you'll notice you're getting better and better until you manage to get on the leaderboard one day.

  • Dean Ayala Could See Hearthstone's Arena With Skill-Based Matchmaking - Is It Right For The Game?

Well put. The KO system is great and allows noticeable personal progression. Winning more games is 10x more rewarding than having a higher MMR rating.
I realize that this comes at a cost - The vast majority of people have little success in arena. Every 8th run ends in a 0-3! That’s why I don’t understand the pricing of it. They should reduce the cost by 100 gold and take out the pack from the prize pool
