    Are you really a camel?

    Only on Wednesdays.

Only in the corporate world can Community Manager and Manager, Community be two different titles.

It admittedly gets a little confusing and frustrating when "manager" is the catch all for people who manage a team vs. the entire discipline being called "community management."

It's part of the reason "community development" is the new standard at some companies. Not sure if we'll adopt that.

Cool, it would be good if she played D3 at least once on her stream.

Do you mean my personal stream, which is done on my own time outside of working hours?

I have a bot message set up specifically to address this (!diablo in my chat). Because I'm a Twitch Affiliate, I purposely don't stream Diablo because it (a) helps separate work from personal life which is hugely important to mental health and (b) could be considered a conflict of interest, as I do make money (albeit very little) from streaming. I also avoid other ARPGs for that reason, though I play plenty of them privately with friends.

I steep myself in the culture and game play all day, every day at work. I need that break in the morning to do something for myself because... well, it's healthy. :)

To clarify - I kind of already was/have been. I was promoted from Associate Community Manager to Community Manager. It was always a lot easier to just call me CM externally because it's easier to parse (and sometimes character limit issues were a problem, lol).

CM structures are different at every company (it's far from a standardized field of work), and Blizzard's in particularly has changed DRASTICALLY over the years. Ours (currently) goes:

    • Community Representative (entry level)
    • Associate Community Manager
    • Community Manager [<-- I am now here.]
    • Manger, Community (team lead)

Functionally to the community, this doesn't change anything. It's great personal growth for me and nice recognition, but you probably won't notice any real changes from the player perspective.

A fitting job for someone named like an alcoholic beverage and a cigarette brand.

I've definitely not heard this joke my entire life since grade school.

Fun fact: As a family, we've vowed to never name our children "Joe" or "Harry."

Look at the bright side. With a name like that, trolls don't stand a chance.

Yeah, my parents were at least three decades ahead of them!

Congrats! Hopefully it came with a nice bump in pay. Now become team lead so you can spill the Diablo beans :P

That sounds like a great way to immediately lose team lead, lol.

How do you get a job like this? What kind of experience?

I started at Blizzard in the customer service department as a game master in 2009 before moving to their forum support team. That's a lot of similar work in terms of social media and writing, just with a more concentrated focus. I had always had interest in community management and, at the time, was very active as a fan in the WoW community.

After that, I did about a year of community management work at a smaller game company, working on several different titles (a couple FPS games, an anime sports game, an mmo, and a side-scrolling brawler). Between that and my background in digital cinema, post-production, and creative writing, I had the applicable skills to apply for a community representative role at Blizzard a couple years later. I've been doing Diablo-specific community management since 2013.

Most community managers have vastly different journeys. But that one is mine!

Also fun fact: I was named after this song. My dad heard it on the way to the hospital. :)
