Public Apology and Gratitude to a Hearthstone Dev. (Hamilton Chu)

My name's Kevin from Nairobi, Kenya. Avid HS player, stream sniper and frequenter of this subreddit (i.e I'm here all the damn time).

About a year ago, I was a big asshole to a dev team member of the game I currently love the most. My behaviour was borne of ignorance and misplaced gamer anger. I'm here to share a cringe-worthy story and gain some penance. Hopefully.

Last year, Hamilton Chu came to a LAN event in Nairobi (proof) and I didn't care much. Outside a bunch of Totalbiscuit streams, I'd never touched the game. I didn't think it was my thing but it was sure as hell fun to watch someone else rage and get rekt. I had however put enough time into Diablo 3 to not like the state it was in at the time and that made me a very mean idiot to Mr.Chu when I got the chance to talk to him.

I said a lot of stupid things and visibly annoyed him. At one point, I suggested that you can start Hearthstone from WoW (Someone was playing WoW and I glimpsed the word Hearthstone in it (Never played WoW in my life). Again, ignorance fueled me that day. Sorry.) He was a great guy though and brought a lot of good stuff to the event. Despite my apparent rudeness, he gave me a Hearthstone card with a code for a single pack.

After the event, I decided to at least play the tutorial and call it quits. That never happened. I play more Hearthstone than I put the time into actual work. Productivity has shot down immensely since and my salt levels have been through the roof. I'd never have tried it out if not for him and I want to thank him for it. And apologise for my behaviour.

I now realise how lucky I was to be in the presence of a member of the dev team who I all regard as rockstars right now. I'd fangirl if I ever saw any of them right now. I was lucky but didn't realise it. The follies of youth. XD Things would play out a lot differently if I even had a minute of his time right now.

I've since recruited a bunch of players to the game and gained friends from this subreddit and beyond. HS has changed a large part of my life for sure.

Thank you Hamilton Chu for urging me to play a game I didn't care to try and for putting up with my baby rage. You're a saint in both counts.

Thanks for reading up guys. :)

EDIT : It's amazing Hamilton Chu actually heard me out. Wouldn't have dreamt of it but there was no reason to not try at least.

This really blew up more than I thought; for better or for worse but that happens when you put yourself out there. Thank you everyone for your comments. Actually read through them all and pondered on most.

I'll just clarify some things : The stream sniper comment is a joke, a bad one, but a joke still. I can't snipe since I dont even get to higher ranks (no point previously) and I play random weird decks with inconsistent win rates. That's how I play the game. I'm a Johnny through and through. Hence the flair. Noone would actually publicly say they stream snipe right?

Finally, the point of even writing all this out : To share the story of how I got to play Hearthstone and make an apology to Mr.Chu. I love being part of this community and the circumstances of this being part of my life is what I wanted to share. I really dont have any other reasons. IRL this'd be a casual conversation and not me talking from a pulpit. Don't think too much off it. WYSIWYG. Whether or not you still believe I'm an asshole to this day is entirely up to you. I wanted to get this out there. A story among duelists.

Thank you all for hearing me out and more-so The Hearthstone Team for being the greatest devs I've ever had the pleasure of engaging. We are all lucky to have you.

    Greetings Kevin!

Hamilton is currently at gamescom, but he saw your post and wanted to send you a personal reply:

    Hi Kevin,

I remember you well and there's absolutely no need for apology. I always enjoy getting into good conversations about Hearthstone and games in general. So it was really fun chatting with all you folks at the iHub. Clearly there's an amazing and vibrant tech & gaming scene in Kenya that I didn't fully appreciate before meeting you all.

So, thanks for the conversation that day, and thanks for giving Hearthstone a try!

    Yours, Hamilton
