ITT: Things that don't work like you thought

As a longtime MTG player there are a LOT of things that works in different ways and I'd like to have a thread to list a lot of them.

In this list you won't find things like "attacking works differently", but some things that are not told, but work in a completely different way than in MTG. To start it off, here's a few:

  • When an opponent takes control of one of your minions, he does not just take control of it, he becomes the owner of it. This means that using a card like Sap will return it to his hand instead of yours. Correction Might actually destroy the minion. -many sources.

  • If a minion has "Cannot be the target of spells or hero powers" does not mean that the opposing hero cannot attack it if he wields a weapon.

  • A minion with Stealth and Taunt cannot be attacked, you may attack any other target if there are no other taunters.

  • If you cast humility (change the attack of a minion to 1) on a lightspawn, it doesn't do anything as the lightspawn's attack is always equal to its health. -by /u/ampersand55

  • If you have 10 cards in your hand and would acquire one more, the newest card will be instantly discarded.

  • If a minion created by a battlecry or other effect ("token") is returned to a player's hand, it may be played just like a normal card.

  • If your enemy uses misdirection trap and your minion attacks your hero with a weapon equipped. Your minion will take damage equal to your weapons damage. -by /u/_MRAL_

  • Minion cards are not spells. This shouldn't probably even be here, but the lack of this information wrecked my first Arena game. The Coin counts as a spell.

  • Silencing will take away ALL abilities, stat changes and effects that are in effect before the silence is applied, i.e. Earth Shock (Silence target minion then deal 1 damage to it) targeted on a minion with health larger than 2 that has been Equalized (Health becomes 1) will not kill the target. -by /u/ohstylo

  • If you silence a faceless manipulator it does not revert to its default form. -by /u/abuttfarting

  • Divine Shield prevents the first damage that is dealt, it does not prevent any further effects from the damage source, except for "deathtouch" from cards like Cobra. -by /u/Ardailec & /u/Massacrul Correction Divine Shield prevents all effects that are tied to dealing that certain damage that has been dealt. -by /u/J0llyR0dger

  • Eye for an eye deals the damage you take to the enemy hero. But since arcane missiles deals the damage one at a time, the only damage dealt to the enemy is 1. -by /u/xorenadosuke

  • Bouncing a Polymorphed / Hexed minion will give you back that actual Sheep / Frog, not the original card. -by /u/Scisyhp

  • The description for stealth is actually incorrect, stealthed minions can't be targeted by your opponent; you can still target your own stealthed minions. -by /u/k7rnt

  • If a minion has Blessing of Wisdom, the player who played the Blessing will always be the one drawing cards, even if it gets mind controlled. -by /u/chakazulu1

  • If you silence a minion that has equality on it, it returns to full life. -by /u/BadgerBadger8264

  • Health, this deserves a category of it's own, because the layers work in a way that even a L3 judge won't know what happens.

  • How Health / Toughness and damage works together is an interesting one. If you give +2 health to a minion with damage on it, it will still be damaged. However, if you double a minions health and it has damage on it, it just doubles the damaged health. Giving +health does not count as healing.

  • If you have a 2/3 and it gets damaged by one. It becomes a 2/3 with one damage. Then, you give it a +1/+1 buff, so it becomes a 3/4 with one damage. If it gets silenced, the +1/+1 gets removed. You would think it goes back down to a 2/3 with one damage, but it actually becomes a 2/3 with NO damage. This is because when max health decreases, missing HP has priority over remaining HP. -by /u/WoodyTrombone & /u/imgnakikurbt

  • Say you have a 2/3 and it gets damaged by 1 so it becomes a 2/2. Then it gets a +1/+1 buff so it becomes a 3/3. If it gets silenced, the 1/1 gets removed. You would think it goes back down to a 2/2 but it actually becomes a 2/3. The +1/+1 'heals' it and increased the max health by 1. -by /u/Sumadin

  • If you have a 2/7 and a blood imp (makes the creature 2/8), and you swap it's attack and damage, you get a 8/3. -by /u/poeticmatter

I will keep updating this thread if I think of other things or if people comment.

EDIT: I'm back again, will keep updating the thread. @ 16:00 GMT.

If you each have a sylvanus in play and there are other creatures it is random which death trigger goes off first. (no APNAP) If there is a sylvanus dies to a 5/5 and the owner of the 5/5 has the paladin secret that brings their creature back to life then (I assume) it is random which death trigger goes first. The one time this happened to me the paladin secret triggered first, and then sylvanus triggered and stole the ressurected 5/1.

    • If you silence a creature that is mind controlled it will not revert to the original owner.
    • Some creatures like pyromancer say 'after you play a spell' do 1 damage. Other cards like Gadgetzan Auctioneer say 'when you play a spell' draw a card. They happen at different times. Pay close attention to the wording when you have a pyromancer out. Auctioneer happens before the spell resolves and pyromancer happens after the spell resolves.
