Guys, I have a master plan to get Blizzard to print Echo on Witch’s Brew

So hear me out. Because Witch’s Brew is not an Echo card, its cost can still be reduced to 0. So if we can make a combo deck with Witch’s Brew abusing the fact that it can cost 0, Blizzard will have no choice but to consider it an echo card so it can’t be used to OTK anymore. Here is my proposed combo:

  1. Play a Highlander deck so you can get Zephrys to give you Sorcerer’s Apprentice
  2. Play Sorcerer’s Apprentice (2 Mana)
  3. Play Faceless Manipulator on Apprentice (7 Mana total)
  4. Play any 3 drop and Mutate it into Auchenai Soulpriest (10 Mana total)
  5. Play Witch’s Brew on your opponent’s face until they die

Now many cynics would say the combo is unreliable to due the fact that it’s a low chance to Mutate into Auchenai, and the fact that since it’s a Highlander deck it would be hard to draw into the combo pieces. But to that I would say it either happens or it doesn’t so it’s 50/50 at worst.

So please, help make this deck meta so Witch’s Brew becomes Echo.

But then that also causes problems when new players see cards with a keyword, but also seemingly the same mechanic without the keyword. As much as it’s a meme at this point to say it, something like that will only cause confusion for the player. Is it the same mechanic? If it’s the same mechanic then why doesn’t it say so? Does it act differently somehow?

The thing is, that extra information from one off keywords in an expansion is extremely unlikely to ever amount to that much, given how sparingly Blizz wants to use it (at the moment it’s just 3 cards with 2 keywords right?).

The vast majority of new players play in standard mode, so that rarely happens. For new players who start with the rotation when the first set of this year is released, I'd argue that it would be more confusing to see a single card that says Echo with no context. If and when they start playing in Wild and they see old keywords, at least they'll have fundamental knowledge of Hearthstone so that influx of new information is manageable.

It's definitely weird to have Witch's Brew and The Witchwood in standard at the same time. Can't argue that fact lol. But in this case it meant we could address Echo (and Sn1p-Sn4p Warlock in particular), and not have to break the Auchenai, Sorcerer's Apprentice, Witch's Brew dream in standard which is sweet.

Like I said, I know why they do it, I just personally think that that reasoning is kind of ridiculous. Their design philosophy with keywords is to make them as intuitive as possible, so that you can guess what it does based on the name of it, and likely be right (which was why enrage was removed, they didn’t think it was intuitive enough).

The problem I have with it is that, if they do what they can to make the keywords as intuitive as possible, then why is their reasoning for not including old keywords as a one off that it’s too unintuitive for new players.

Also, joust was never a keyword?

It's not an issue of being unintuitive for new players. It's just a lot of information to learn when you're new to the game and adding another keyword or mechanic to that bunch is impactful.

I mean I get why they do it like this, and they’re relatively consistent with it.

I just think the reasoning is kind of stupid, since it makes reusing keywords a bit messier later on.

We've added lifesteal and discover to our evergreen keywords in the past years, but to reuse keywords like joust or inspire we would need to want to print a significant amount of cards with that keyword on them for it to be worthwhile for players who weren't around to know the keyword the first time it was used. If we wanted to we probably would, it just hasn't happened yet.
