How the new Bonus Star system works in ranked

Since there was some confusion about this from some people (myself included), here's how it works, from the official blog post:

For example, if you have a Star Bonus of 5x and you win a game, you’ll get five Stars instead of one. If your winning game is a part of a win streak, you’ll get double that: 10 Stars! Upon hitting each ranked floor in your climb, your Star Bonus will be reduced by one. When playing with a Star Bonus you’ll be matched by your matchmaking rating (MMR), meaning you’ll be matched even more precisely with players of your similar skill level when climbing!

So, in short:

  • You get a Star Bonus based on the previous month's top rank. It's 11 stars if you've been Legend, 10 stars if you've made it to Diamond 5, 9 for Diamond 10, etc.
  • Each win will give you as many stars as your Star Bonus.
  • Each rank floor you reach while climbing will take away 1 star from your Star Bonus, until you have used up all your Star Bonus upon reaching your previous rank.
  • Win streaks still exist and will double your Star Bonus.
  • Until you've reached your previous rank, you will be matched according to your MMR, not rank. This means that if you've been Legend last Month, your opponents will be other Legend players even when you start back in Bronze at the start of the month.

The site just states that it applies to wins, but I assume it also multiplies stars lost?

    No multipliers when lost.

Could you please also clarify the initial Star Bonus a player gets on one season if she has reached Legend on the previous season?

At least 10, could be 11.

Do we know if win steak bonuses occur all the way up to legend? Versus before they stopped at Rank 5.

Win streak stops at Diamond 5.
