A lot of players wonder why more game devs don't talk to their community the way Riot employees do. I love talking with players - it's one of my favorite parts of my job - but the reality is that it's stressful and difficult to keep up with, and a lot of that work isn't seen. 1/4

@Altombre I think most of the reason devs don't interact with players is because the expectation is they'll just do it on your own time, off-hours. Unless your management or projects are making time for the interaction to happen, interaction will never be this sustainable thing.

@Altombre I go through phases of interaction, but ultimately there is always some moment that occurs where I mistakenly make things worse than they would have been by not interacting at all.

@Altombre In those moments, it can be hard to justify all the time and the effort spent. Why would I dedicate so much time and effort to something that had an arguably positive impact when I could instead channel that time to help the people on my team?

@Altombre It isn't always going to go well, sometimes it's going to go really, really poorly. Just have to remember that community interaction is a long-term commitment with net upside. Inspiring people to become game designers is worth all the downside, at least to me.
