      @IksarHS FTL?

        @FilmCriticKurt I mostly just mean all the high-budget single-player stuff I've missed. I've been playing nothing but games like (and including) FTL the last 10 years.

      If I had to rank them as present-day games with no bonus points for when they were released, it would go something like this... Last of Us 2 Red Dead 2 Ghost of Tsushima Horizon Odyssey Skyrim Witcher

        Skyrim and Witcher show their age, but Skyrim in particular is super impressive to me. It was ahead of it's time as an open world game. If you look at the other stuff that was coming out around that time not much of it is comparable.

          Odyssey was honestly great, best of the Assassin's Creed games I've played. Kassandra as a main character was awesome, the world was beautiful, and there were some intriguing systems. Narrative was pretty good, but not really comparable to the other games I played.

            Horizon gives my hands cramps. Controls are really rewarding when you get there but it took me 10 hours to get comfortable. The fantasy was amazing, loved the world. Narrative was a great buildup even if I didn't love where it landed.

              Ghost, imo, is underrated. Probably suffered a little from not doing much 'new' stuff. The systems were a little weak. That said, the moment to moment gameplay was fun, the story was fantastic, and there were a ton of 'holy shit' moments from both.

                Red Dead is hard to compare to anything else. As a game developer, it's a marvel. The only way you can make something like Red Dead 2 is to have a thousand developers working for 5 years+, which they probably did. No one does open world like Rockstar, they are the best.

                  As for Last of Us 2, it's just a best-in-class cinematic experience. Never have I sat back and enjoyed actors play their role in a game like I have in Last of Us.

                    Everything else about the game (at least when compared to the stuff on this list) is medium. They are just so good at telling an interactive story that it'll be an experience I remember for years and years.

                @IksarHS tsushima's quality of life stuff really felt great to me - the frequent checkpointing, the immediately available fast travel, how the meter refilled by an extra 1 point every time you died in a fight to help the player if they wanted it. experience felt very supportive

      @IksarHS I'm noticing a lack of Nintendo on this list. Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild are definitely worth a go, amazing games.

          @ZeddyHS I've started Zelda and put it down like 5 times. One of these days it'll catch me. Same with God of War.

          @IksarHS ah that's a shame. the lore and the mechanics are well worth the challenge. also i think comparing it to witcher 3 and skyrim is interesting (all diff kinds of fantasy games). but it's not for everyone

            @musicalcolin The ‘kill these 20 trivial monsters over and over to reach the boss you want to attempt again’ totally kill the game for me.

      @IksarHS I love open world games and completely with you on this. Skyrim was the first one (for me) where I fell in love with it, but the rest on this list are great too

        @contigwrites I think if I were to make a list of most impressive game for its time, Skyrim would definitely top the list. The fantasy of the world is probably my favorite, hard to beat Elder Scrolls :o.
