As I spend more time with the new Ratchet and Clank, the more I appreciate it. The narrative pacing, weapon progression, and level layout all center around respecting the player’s time. I can sit down for 45mins-1hr and progress meaningfully in all those areas. (1/5)

The carrots are more subtle, there aren’t any cheap tricks that force me into a loop of what’s next, what’s next, what’s next. My motivation is mostly intrinsic, the game earns your trust by revealing its structure and saying have as much as you want til you’re full. (2/5)

As someone who rolls his eyes at the next bloated 50/100hr game, Rift Apart is the type of experience I seek out. Games that can fit into a busy schedule, games that respect your time rather than take up all of it. Somewhere along the way, the industry forgot how to do that.(3/5)

The pendulum is beginning to swing back though and Rift Apart is one example of how to do it right. Show your core game experience early and establish the player contract. Stick to the key agreed upon details (ex/ meaningful session length). Delight within that structure.(4/5)

Make no mistake that last part is really hard, but a defined structure helps your designers focus on those delightful moments. In closing, I love Rift Apart because of the love it gives back. Thank you @insomniacgames for respecting my time, thank you for respecting the player.
