I have many feelings regarding @Celestalon's Tournament Mode tweets. Not the good kind of feelings. Not in any way related to him directly. Thought about doing a @HSTopDecks article but it'd turn into a dev team hit piece about design philosophy more than anything.

Instead, I'll just wait for 2022's Standard year announcement. I'll wait for something HS desperately needs: social features. Tournament Mode would've been such a feature. Please let the community build a community INSIDE YOUR GAME, Team 5.

@tharid I don’t disagree at all that Hearthstone is in need of social/community-building features. I struggle to see how making a mode that didn’t satisfy most people was the right move to solve that though. Happy to hear your thoughts!

@Celestalon Definitely not the right move, agreed! Your prototype didn't fly. All good. I could share my thoughts regarding "my iteration" of a cool in-client multiplayer mode but that would add just another viewpoint. But I keep asking myself: Where are the true design limitations?

@Celestalon And that is when it's not about Tournament Mode anymore. It's a Blizz problem. Are execs/producers not prioritizing social features? Why is nobody looking at the BGs formula and the fact that true MP modes besides 1v1 in HS could be insanely fun?

@tharid I don’t think anyone disagrees that social features and more multiplayer game modes would be a great addition to Hearthstone. We want to do those things. But they’re a *massive* undertaking, and it’s only possible to add so much msssive stuff to the game at the same time.

@tharid We’ve just come off a string of other massive additions (Mercs being the largest), and all that new stuff has room for refinement and stabilization. More new stuff will come in the future.

@Celestalon To me, it's obvious that developing TM isn't a design problem. It's a resource problem. Why are initial designers like you not getting all the time and resources to invent a crazy-good multiplayer experience like BGs?

@tharid Heh, resources aren’t an infinitely available thing, especially when it comes to skilled developers. We’ve been growing the HS team steadily for a while now, but finding people for the roles we open isn’t instant. It takes considerable time to find people.

@tharid We make the most of everyone we have working on the team. Initial Design’s primary focus is on new expansions. Where we have time, people split off to work on other projects. Other teams spin up and grow in size too, like BGs/Mercs having full dedicated design teams now.
