What game genre is most in need of innovation? We often talk about “the WoW Killer,” also Magic Killer and Fortnite Killer. Are there examples of games that dominate a category but could be dethroned?

@themattlondon Tarkov, hands down. Next big thing IMO. Extraction shooter? Not sure what the genre is called It’s a hugely popular game with (IMO) weak controls and it’s incredibly complex.

@IksarHS Interesting. It always looked to me like a hybrid of things like L4D and DayZ. A more approachable version of that would be super cool.

@themattlondon Been playing a game called vigor on console that nails the systems but gameplay I still think a little lacking. Genre will get there IMO, it’s like battle Royale meets progression.

@themattlondon Sports genre stagnated a lot over last decade. Ultimate team does some good things but overall think the player base suffered because of it + certain licensing deals. Early 2000s had a lot of innovation, but formula is there now for main franchises. Pyre = last great sports game.

@GW_Alec @themattlondon As a big fan of sports and basketball the most, completely agree. I would sink my free time in the descent NBA game, if they were so much money grab oriented.

@themattlondon As a more abstract idea, I'd be interested in what happens when a AAA studio throws the entirety of the budget as procedural generation and scale. So much of our focus is dev now on photorealism or extremely expensive stylized assets.

@themattlondon So what happens when you use an inexpensive, reproducible art style but still throw that $200M and 5 years of dev into a truly massive world.

@themattlondon Roguelike (Hades and Rift Wizard showed off some cool ideas but lots of room still) Autobattler (TFT, BGs) Battle Royale (Warzone etc)

@mike_donais I’d love a battle royale with a lower barrier to entry. I tried getting into warzone and bounced off it after 30 games because I never stopped sucking.

@themattlondon How about something like Babble Royale?

@themattlondon I think more about games that I want that aren’t there, rather than incrementally replacing existing ones. I want the 2020s version of Pirates, of Shattered Galaxy, of Privateer. Shattered Galaxy especially I wish someone would make a good modern version of.
