i want to RT some stuff i disagree with but i have a lot of new followers and i want to make it explicitly clear that when i do something like that, it is not an invitation nor an excuse to dogpile the person if you have salt you need to disburse, do it in the thread

the community you create is the community you deserve. they are maintained over time through both example and direct setting of expectations and what is acceptable. you must be explicit when setting those expectations do it right, you get ffxiv do it wrong, you get wow

@DevSpacePrez i love me some wow but when i played, i got pugs being shitty in the first week three years and 1k hours into ffxiv, the worst i've ever even seen was some slight passive aggression or annoyance, and everyone thanks each other and apologizes at the end never seen a single flame

@chhopsky To be fair, I think both modern WoW and FFXIV are more single player RPGs than MMOs. I desperately crave the old days of Everquest and FFXI. (And other people do too, hence WoW Classic) Back when MMOs were actually about interacting with other people once in awhile.

@chhopsky But I also think the #1 area for improvement in the game industry right now is designing games for less toxicity. There's things we can do in both the gameplay design and in matchmaking that would make a tremendous difference and we just... aren't.

@DevSpacePrez you're right, and it's something i've made pitches about before - the design ideology differences between a multiplayer single-player game, a co-op game, and an MMO are stark, but they all get called 'mmo' i miss dayz so much, and the version i miss doesn't exist anymore

@chhopsky My dream game is basically Star Wars Galaxies + Dark Souls

@DevSpacePrez mmm i can *taste* that. my dream game abandons performance binaries with subjective interpretations of controlled space and the way players believe the space is controlled dictates their decisions. that is less easy to define, but i assure you it works. in this essay i wil

@chhopsky Reminds me of Shadowbane and other early MMOs which allowed players to build their own cities (Star Wars Galaxies) I've also always wanted to build a "guild wars" mmo (lol) about actually building castles and placing guards and towers and then sieging another guild's base.
