Self-reflection: One of my biggest sources of lost productivity is things that involve waiting 10sec-5min (downloading a new build, syncing latest data, searching for something in a tool that takes 20sec, etc), that *don't* grab focus back when they're ready.

Ironically, the problem here is that I *want* to be productive, so when I'm waiting for something that's gunna take 1min, I don't just stare at it for 1min, I swap over to something else lower priority... Then 10min later realize that the 1min thing finished 9min ago.

The worst for me is when someone asks me something, and it's like "Oh, sure, I can find that for you, one sec." *runs a search for the thing, should take 30sec* *tabs over to something else* *hours later* "Oh, shit."

@Celestalon Good to know. Don't be afraid to bump you when you wander off.

@TheWizardGrimm Yup. Please bump me when I've tried to juggle too many things and didn't notice that I dropped one of them. Trust me, I'll feel worse much later when I realize I dropped it a while ago. 😭

@Celestalon i turned off the beeping sound on my microwave and now sometimes i forget about food for 40 minutes

@RidiculousHat Dude, a microwave that doesn't beep when it's done sounds utterly useless to me.

@Celestalon it is much better at cooking food without waking a sleeping wife and/or requiring constant vigilance to open the door at 0:01

@RidiculousHat I will say that Z being able to sleep through a nuclear bomb going off in the house is an absolutely huge blessing.

@Celestalon Timers can be really good for doing holding yourself accountable for switching back. (You can even give yourself enough time to complete a short task before switching back if you're able!)

@sh13ldbearer I'd love a little task tray app that was like 2 clicks to say "flash [the current window] in the task bar in [1/5/30] min". Anyone know if this exists?

@Celestalon Oh god tell me about it. I used to manage a web application that more often than not hit this sweet spot of loading time that was just a teensy tiny bit too long. 10 minutes later I'm back from wherever I went during loading and see that it finished 9 mins and 35 secs ago ...

@tharid 30sec wait times are the absolute WORST.

@Cosnirak Honestly, probably. Never bothered to get diagnosed, but wouldn’t at all be surprised.

@Celestalon Making the icons on the Ttaskbar blink when something happens in-app is one of the best QoL changes any dev can have.

        @ArchivistOwl Yes, exactly.

@Celestalon I agree 100%, that said I absolutely ABHOR anything stealing the focus. I think it should be a design commandment that only the user controls focus. I have an issue nearly daily where I'm typing in a password and something steals focus and it appears in plaintext!
      • DevSpacePrez

Posted 3 years, 8 months ago (Source)
@Celestalon I think this should be considered a key security flaw. IMO the user should always have control of focus, always. Only user inputs should ever change it. That said, this is the very reason and intent for the task bar.

@Celestalon Along with this, I absolutely hate dialogue windows that do not appear on the task bar. Windows control panel appears on task bar but some of its sub-menus do not, and create windows that are effectively "invisible" if behind another window.

@DevSpacePrez This and everything you said above. Definitely agree with @Celestalon's complaint -- I need to be alerted that the thing I started two distractions ago has finished, but under no circumstances do I want anything actively stealing focus. Something flashing on taskbar will suffice.

@7OF0 @DevSpacePrez Yeah, very fair. Taskbar flash is fine, stealing focus is probably overkill and bad.

@Celestalon I’ve had to marking messages in Slack “unread” for that same reason. If I leave them and get lost in the rabbit hole I forget why I even started looking for something lol
      • Chadd Nervigg

Posted 3 years, 8 months ago (Source)
@AmyJantzer Yep, that's exactly what I do with slack messages, and also e-mails.

@Celestalon @AmyJantzer I use flags for outlook messages and I have “sections” rigged with tasks to keep it organized. As for slack - the marking things unread is a so necessary in WFH. Just dk how I’m going to do that IRL again…maybe post its on people’s heads? XD

@Mathamagicia @Celestalon @AmyJantzer Marking unread just means I read it again, so I write reminder mails for anything I need to remember at all. Only one place for things I need to remember - outlook, and I either action right away or move it to outlook right away, no “I’ll just remember this”’s allowed.
