Elden Ring Day 3 & 4: Endless Discovery After I killed the first 'story' boss, I attempted to continue into the castle towards what I assume is more story stuff. I still pew-pew most monsters down, but eventually I find a dark room with a big mean black knight who wrecks me.

I use this opportunity to say, let's do some more exploring and come back later.... I can't really overstate how fun exploring is in this game, hard for me to continue main story when I can just go explore the world. Let's talk for a second about why it's so fun (to me).

#1 - Danger! This one is probably obvious, but when the world is dangerous, exploration is more rewarding. When I can just charge up any hill, blow past any enemy, fly to any tower, discovery is less interesting.

When you find an area that seems interesting but is too dangerous to explore, it feels so rewarding to come back when I'm strong enough. Elden Ring does a great job of paying off those moments with cool rewards.

Whenever something feels dangerous and difficult, I basically always feel rewarded for making the effort to clear the area by a fancy chest or a secret new space. Some of these rewards have been totally mind-blowing, which leads me to my next point....

#2 Defying Expectation I was trying to define for myself other reasons why discovery and exploration feels so much more rewarding to me in Elden vs a game like Horizon, which I was recently playing.

In Horizon, areas off the beaten path always fall in line with my general expectation. There are some npcs, with some small problems, and they need helping out by interacting with things in the general area. A bunch of sidequests, dialogue, whatever.

That's not necessarily bad, the dialogue is funny, I fall in love with some of the characters, and the combat along the way is pretty fun. The difference in Elden Ring is that these areas of exploration often defy my expectations, regularly blowing them away.

Will this new area have giant crabs with grizzly bear heads? Will there be a spooky ghost that guards a secret cavern? Will there be a giant stone man 50X my size that shoots a bow with rocket ship arrows and I have to do mounted combat?

Maybe there is secret chest that teleports me to another part of the world and I have to fight giant shrimp monsters, trying to escape a cave far above my level (this happened...).

Recently I found this stone building off the beaten path that no one told me to go to, I was just exploring out in the world. I found a button, I stand on it. It's an elevator! I start descending..... I'm still descending 15 seconds later....

By the time I get to the bottom it's literally just a whole new world. I was mind-blown. How does this just .... exist? In a random stone building?! What if I never discovered it?! I haven't had a moment like this in a game for years. The ultimate in defying my expectations.

Ok, so, my progress. I've died a lot but I think I'm pretty OP now. I found a staff just sitting in a building that was really good, then I always found a spell that throws big purple rocks. I felt more powerful, so I went back to try and kill some bosses I had previously failed.

I killed that stupid mounted paladin man at the start of the game. Get wrecked by purple rocks! I killed a giant dragon in a swamp (wow he was so cool looking). He dropped a dragon heart which seems important but no idea where to go to use it.

I went back to the castle, spent probably 2-3 hours there, eventually found the next 'story' boss, a guy named Godrick if I remember right. Godrick, Godrick, Godrick, what a badass you are.

I killed him after a few tries, I think I'm probably higher level than I should be for this fight. However, his transition into 'stage 2' of his fight was the most metal shit I've ever seen. My jaw was wide open. Looking forward to you experiencing that if you haven't already!

At this point I get on my horse to find more map unlock areas, I found 3-4. In retrospect, I sort of regret this because it's much more fun to discover things as you are about to fight them as opposed to just seeing everything as I ride by on my horse to come back later.

Eventually I find a tower in the eastern zone and I have to do a bunch of jumping puzzles to get inside of it, then descend down from the inside. It's definitely a higher level area than I should be, but was incredible to explore.

I find some nice farming area where I can kill 2 monsters for 1100 runes each, do that for awhile, and that's where I am for now. Will probably get a couple more levels to use a moon sword thingy I found then back to main story stuff, if I can find it.

Still having an absolute blast, afraid this world has ruined all other open worlds for me, though. I'll enjoy it while it lasts!

@IksarHS I couldn’t figure out how to get in the tower. Is the entrance just on the side of the tower? At the top?

@TrickonometryHS the tower I'm in is called ... divine tower of caelid? I think that's it. If that's the tower you are trying to get in, the entrance is along the side. You have to jump up some wooden stumpy looking things onto the side of the tower, climb some ladders, climb some more ladders...
