obviously a huge souls fan and will go to bat for unforgiving mechanics, obtuseness as a tool for immersion, static difficulty being a must have, all that being so core to the design and i still think absolutely nothing would be lost by adding a separate easy mode. vibes mode

@WaltCodes https://t.co/ZF0nfgzITU I like most of what this says and think the low-hanging discussion of "easy mode" is usually the wrong path

@WaltCodes if sekiro had an option to change checkpointing between "classic" and "modern" - where modern did what metroid dread or tsushima did by just dropping you right back outside the fight with no significant consequence - i would've devoured that game

@RidiculousHat @WaltCodes Note that Bioshock did this and gamers RIOTED about it. Human psychology is a weird thing lmao. I don't completely disagree with you, before anybody jumps down my throat.

@DevSpacePrez @RidiculousHat yeah true. i think if you’re gunna add knobs you have to do it in a a separate mode to avoid that. if the base game has those options i would also feel weird about it tbh

@WaltCodes @RidiculousHat And the thing is souls already has many of those knobs? Boss hard? Use summons. Use an AI NPC. Use a co-op buddy. Use the weapon element that the boss is weak to. Go find the item that stuns the boss that a quest NPC has. Avoid that boss until you're higher level. Etc.

@WaltCodes @RidiculousHat Which isn't to say the game isn't still hard or that other people are right or wrong for playing it a certain way (christ, I hate having to keep re-state this over and over or people assume I'm saying things I'm not)

@DevSpacePrez @RidiculousHat i definitely take your point but i tend to disagree when souls fans say game mechanics equal difficulty knobs. learning boss type weaknesses isn't an accessibility option, it's how you get good at the game. and these options would be for people who don't invest in the game as-is

@WaltCodes @RidiculousHat But that's the thing, difficulty and getting good at the game are separate from accessibility and access to the game. People with a physical disability are different from people just not wanting to invest the time, and it mixes things up to lump them all together.

@DevSpacePrez @RidiculousHat haha i knew i was wrong to use the term "accessibility", because yes that has a very specific meaning i am definitely talking about "approachability" and difficulty and having a rip-chord way of playing the game outside the normal experience for those folks who usually miss out

@WaltCodes @RidiculousHat That said, I think a lot of people wanting an easy mode to see the content (something I appreciate in both wow and uncharted, for example) somewhat miss how much of the game IS about overcoming challenge, which is where all these discussions break down.

@WaltCodes @RidiculousHat Souls has no huge story revelations, no princess to save and cutscene ending, the story is in your struggle. I don't know how to say this without possibly upsetting someone, and I'm sorry, so its just my personal view here and maybe I'm wrong 1/2

@WaltCodes @RidiculousHat But I legit think watching a streamer attempt a boss 10 times and fail and then finally succeed would be a more fulfilling experience than godmode killing a boss yourself first try. And its free! Streaming is cool! (But I know this feels bad to hear if you wanna play) 2/2

@DevSpacePrez @WaltCodes @RidiculousHat This is my outlook as well; the learning process is far more interesting to me than the actual moment of success, to the point that when I did a Let's Play of DS3, I compiled all my attempts on each big fight: https://t.co/SKFh30rvMv

@WaltCodes @Felmendorf @RidiculousHat But that IS souls. For any other game I'd get it. But for me, without that triumph, souls would be missing its biggest part. Elden does have more argument to having other content than the past ones did.

@DevSpacePrez @Felmendorf @RidiculousHat but again you're describing the core dark souls experience. which is rad and good and does indeed rely on learning from boss to boss. i'm not talking about changing that, or adding any options or anything to it, i'm just saying a totally separate experience. don't see the harm

@WaltCodes @Felmendorf @RidiculousHat Well, the harm is that some people who might get suck on a boss 10-20 times might switch to easy and then miss out on all those moments they were going to have. But I was less talking about the harm and more the lack of virtue.

@DevSpacePrez @WaltCodes @Felmendorf for what it's worth, i don't personally want "easy" mode, i want "i have less time to play games and would like the painful runbacks to not be a required part of my experience" mode. metroid dread had incredibly demanding boss fights but game was <10hr because it saved constantly

@RidiculousHat @WaltCodes @Felmendorf Have you played Elden Ring? At least until the final zone, there's save checkpoints EVERYWHERE. Like literally every 5 feet. The "long funbacks to boss" thing isn't really in ED the way it was in Souls, at least until the very end.
