I have to use every fiber of self control to not come on here and roast the absolute shit out of the poor excuse for a ranked system Halo Infinite uses every day and it just makes me so sad

Usually with these kinds of tweets you have a lot of people defending how things are, but it’s even more of a statement when everyone agrees with something like this, and seems a TON of people have actually stopped playing all together due to the system

Please, it makes no sense that there is even a ranking system if we are all placed into games based off hidden MMR. Start matching people based off their in game rank and make it actually mean something because right now it doesn’t and it’s so demoralizing for us all

@Snip3down Veteran game designer here who has worked on ranking systems and matchmaking. I'm not familiar with Infinite's ranking system, but can add some context at least: Ranking systems and Matchmaking systems are different things, with different goals.

@Snip3down The point of matchmaking systems is (usually) to create fair and fun matches. The point of a ranking system is to provide visible progression for the player. Sometimes, one system can attempt to fill both these goals, but separate ones tend to be the norm these days.

@Snip3down A ranking/progression system lets players feel like they're advancing, making meaningful progress, getting rewards, etc. Often these are designed to reset periodically so that that progression can be experienced again, typically with new rewards.

@Snip3down Player-understandability is important in a ranking/progression system. Matchmaking is very different. Only the server needs to understand how it works, and it can be incredibly complex under the hood. Tons of math/formulae and multiple axes of measurement. So it's often hidden.

@Snip3down None of this is intended to be a defense of Halo Infinite's systems; I'm not familiar enough with them to comment. But maybe that helps explain why these systems could be designed that way.
