Elden Ring Day 5-6: Leaving the Starting Zone... I've explored outside the starting zone (Limgrave) a little, through both being forced and by choice, but now I'm leaving because I feel finished with it. Only took 30 hours (lol).

Exploration and discovery are still highlighting my experience. I went back to the castle I 'finished' on day 2 and found that it was actually much bigger than I thought. Ended up fighting and exploring way more. Secret doors! Giant doggies! Giant towers in the sky!

I wish gear progression was better. I can't help but think it's a bit of a miss where there have been 0 very clear upgrades to my starting gear in 30 hours. Especially since gear is so cool looking and weapons have such a big impact on my experience.

Also am I supposed to be crafting stuff? It's kind of this side thing.... everything I can craft looks sort of lame or tempoary ..... I just don't engage with it, didn't seems interesting.

I read the full description of all my items, wow there is a lot of lore!? I was talking to a design friend today who is convinced that they just failed on telling a coherent story in the first souls game but people liked it so they just sort of adopted it as a brand.

This is probably true. I think the narrative is really interesting but I also think that attempting to brand this game's narrative as best in class for games is a huge stretch. I can appreciate some mystery but this isn't a great narrative mystery.

Great worldbuilding? Absolutely. Who knows, maybe it'll all magically start coming together and I'll change my tune. Despite that, if I had to give a number rating so far, it's the easiest 10/10 I've ever given a game. I'm in love with simply existing in the open world.

I've only met 3 monsters I couldn't defeat so far, but many failures. A doggy at the bottom of the castle, a big black bird man thing standing humbly outside a building, and an actual boss that sometimes just charges the screen as I enter the room and pins me to the door.

About to head north, very excited! I do this thing where I feel the need to complete everything in one space before moving on to the next.... Elden Ring is perfect for me in that respect. Was interesting to the very end, and there is probably still much more I didn't uncover.

I lost count of the bosses I've killed. Probably 10-12 but still only 2 of those bosses were story bosses. I know the important bosses because there is an NPC that explained it to me....sort of shocking how helpful he was. Nothing like that lady who hugs you to (5%) death.

Onward to the zone I can't remember how to spell! With the water and stuff! Wish me luck!

@IksarHS Didn’t you say you only just left the starting area though after 30 hours!? 😂 yeah, you aren’t gonna have the best gear after that 😅 I am still running around in my base armour after 24 hours going further though 😅

@HartfieldHS starting zone not starting area so like 10 bosses, a giant castle, and a huge amount of loot later just nothing that was clear gear progression

@HartfieldHS I don't think the expectation is to have the best gear, I have no idea how to understand if something is the best or not. Just something that was an improvement to what I'm wearing to get excited about.

@Rblhcx Kind of, I played between 2-5 hours of DS2, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Demon’s Souls remake. Didn’t like any of them.

@IksarHS Another narrative semantics thing: worldbuilding vs atmosphere. I haven’t engaged w item descriptions in Elden Ring, and the worldbuilding seems fairly nonsensical. Limgrave doesn’t seem like a real place governed by rules. But the game’s atmosphere is one of the all time greats.

@themattlondon This is good context, it's pretty clear to me I don't really know what worldbuilding means outside of 'do I enjoy existing in this world'.... which is probably not accurate 😬
