For years I've been hoping for some change into how games guide players through the world, and I feel like BOTW and Elden Ring were awesome steps in that direction. The thing I hope to see in OW games is rewarding exploration and putting awesome storylines in these locations.

When making a game, I tend to think if all the features like stats for a DnD character. Do you put more into combat, story, exploration, stats, etc. You only have so many points (budget) so you have to think what's important to what you want the player to feel.

Looking at Bethesda games like Skyrim, Fallout and now Starfield, they have a huge amount of exploration and quests, a voiceless protagonist but choices on what to say to characters with more generic speaking animations. You get more agency and LOTS of content as a result.

Then there is stuff like the Assassin's Creed series where they point you where to go with huge storylines, high quality cinematics, great motion capture acting, and the exploration feels much more about the game telling you where to go at all times.

With BOTW and Elden Ring, they don't tell you shit. You go out and find things. They reward you with stuff to do in even obscure places. As an explorer, I love this. Tho their quests are obtuse, break regularly, and if I didn't Google them, there's no way I would figure it out.

@StephanFrost I feel like the magic will be when someone figures out how to do that *without* requiring a phone/2ndmonitor for google.

@Celestalon For me I think it's putting high quality quest content at those locations. It would likely mean less quests if they are higher cinematic/acting quality, and I'd put more bosses/monsters/smoll dungeons/grind in the open world parts between those moments.
