When you stop and think about them, fingernails are very weird. Like, part of your finger just knows to make really hard cells, and grow a lot, in one particular direction, and the parts around it know to let it through, and handle it moving by slowly, even though it's attached.

@kneckt_rp Hah, entirely sober right now. Just looking at my poor mutilated finger, trying to regrow a nail practically from scratch, and having a tough time of it.

And for the most part, it's really good at keeping this process going, when it's already going. But if this process gets thrown off the rails, such as through significant damage to the nail/bed, it's... not so great... at restarting the process cleanly.
