2022: Elden Ring, but BARELY bc Neon White hit me in a big glowing weak spot. but even tailor-made for me NW can't compete with the sheer awe of ER. every night i come across one more unbelievable discovery, and every morning i rush to discuss findings with friends. untouchable https://t.co/FcPL1utZDC

2021: Inscryption. an absolute master class in "game design as plot". brings every design idea over the finish the line and ties them all together narratively, too. atmosphere is delicious. the fourth-wall breaking boss fights in act 3 are iconic. runner up: Bowser's Fury https://t.co/a7BxTTfkPm

to date I have played 435 hours of Animal Crossing but 2020's best game is Hades. deep, stylish, generous, funny, tough, beautiful, it's a game with so much of itself to share, it's mind-blogging that it holds together (or exists at all). i adored it. honorable mention: CrossCode https://t.co/Q5YXzmdkPa

2019 was the release of the Switch port so i'm calling this one for Dragon Quest XI. single-handedly rekindled my interest in jrpgs. i was fully immersed in a game i mostly left on auto-battle. overstuffed with environmental details, and so much character. runner up: A Short Hike https://t.co/kE4D5Qplgt

2018: Celeste. one more game made in a lab for me personally. perfect challenge ramp that works because movement is immaculate; you feel the devs' thoughtfulness in every action. beautiful music, art, story. could not put it down until i had every berry. runner up: DQ Builders https://t.co/XpookzWZA0

2017 is impossible. multiple all time favorite games. BotW made me feel like a kid again, and it remains my favorite open world game. Odyssey is the best Mario ever made, uncut joy from start to finish. and Hollow Knight is somehow the best metroidvania AND soulslike. wild year https://t.co/8Le41fCjNS

in 2016 I might have said Dark Souls 3, but what stuck with me the most is Hyper Light Drifter. seems like "moody indie action/platformer with snappy movement" is a trend with me. one more amazing OST from Disasterpeace. i got the fake cart and i love it. runner up: Rocket League https://t.co/TqVuuCuEEH

haven't finished and so exclude Bloodborne, Witcher 3 and Undertale BUT Shovel Knight still deserves an unqualified GOTY (cheating again: console port was in 2015) instantly iconic (and heartfelt!) characters. sprawling and satisfying. i still work to the soundtrack. 2014: i mean. it's Hearthstone baby could joke about being legally required to put this here but man, genuinely: i would not shut up about Hearthstone. stayed up late every night, entered a tournament, pored over strategy videos... it's an all timer for me. honored to work on it https://t.co/rPH2bOmhf8

BONUS non-Hearthstone 2014 pick: Destiny. i will probably always think of Destiny as one of "my main games", even when, like now, I haven't picked it up for a whole season or more. constantly impressed by the polish. feel is unmatched. the "FPS space MMO" of my childhood dreams https://t.co/AhGGIAOElT

2013: Fire Emblem Awakening. my first FE, actually. what a perfect game for the 3DS. one of those rare experiences where i try a series i didn't think will be for me but it very much is, and i realize how many other games are waiting for me. runner up: Animal Crossing New Leaf https://t.co/Rh7JAJwmy3

2012 has got to be Spelunky. remarkable game that was kind of a slow burn for me. i just couldn't get that far, i'd get impatient, drop it for a bit. eventually it just clicked. i was bowled over by its depth and unassuming cleverness. i hope it gets taught in game making school https://t.co/1hMS94R9aK

hey guess what it's 2011 and the answer is Dark Souls 1, because Dark Souls 1 is my favorite video game that there is. the level design is very good. i like the fighting. what else do you want from me other great games in 2011 were Rayman Origins, Binding of Isaac, and Skyrim https://t.co/mQoXV1NYCv

2010: Mass Effect 2. i was a big KOTOR/Jade Empire head, thoroughly jazzed on Mass Effect. when 2 came out I was riding high. world felt impossibly limitless and meaningful. still think about how the final mission pays off your BioWare-y relationship management. runner up: VVVVVV https://t.co/hFKm7tgM9G

2009: CoD Modern Warfare 2. it's wild to think this now-institutional formula ever felt fresh, but it did. i was HOOKED. probably the only military shooter i've gone all in on. you just couldn't beat that killstreak high. runner up: Plants vs Zombies https://t.co/ZiymMf5g5I

2008: Left 4 Dead. a visceral marvel that has never been repeated. every level was just so slick and satisfying. constantly think about its survivors vs zombies mode, it's up there with Splinter Cell's spies vs mercs in the asymmetrical multiplayer hall of fame. runner up: Braid https://t.co/6fuigr98PK

2007: another insane year for games. BioShock, Mass Effect, TF2, Portal, Mario Galaxy (and Peggle!) but for me, The Game of 2007 was Rock Band. pinnacle of a genre we were wild for investing so much in. playing Say It Aint So in the basement with my friends is truly a core memory https://t.co/2x3v8CMTy7

Wind Waker! my second favorite Zelda. a rare game with joyful downtime. i adored sailing around, listening to CDs and hunting secrets. 1997 is even nuttier than 1998. look at this. any pick from these is gunna be at least a little arbitrary. so since 1995 is taken and can't be Dark Forces (spoilers), lets say 1997 is Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. immaculate jedi power fantasy, intense multiplayer, FMV glory days https://t.co/vttUS568wr
