You just finished listening to a book on tape. Your friend asks you “hey, did you read that book?”. You can only answer with yes or no. What do you say?

@AlecoGereco This is the most weighted version of the context imaginable 😂

@AlecoGereco Who on earth is answering no to this?

@coL_Sottle I debated this with a friend over the weekend. He was a STRONG no on this one.

@AlecoGereco The purpose of language is shared understanding. Presumably your friend in the hypothetical is wanting to talk to you about the contents of the book, not the method by which you consumed it, so "yes" is the answer that creates the shared understanding desired by both.

@AlecoGereco It’s a contextual question for me. It’s undisputed that it activates a different part of your brain. Usually, I’d say, “yeah, well, listened to it on tape” or something. If I have to choose yes/no, I probably more often land on “yes.”

@AlecoGereco But if it was like an English assignment to read it, I wouldn’t consider a book on tape to be completing the assignment.

@hsdecktech Interesting take! I think I agree with you. If the question was phrased to be in more of an academic context than a casual friend talking w/ friend context I think that might change my answer.

@AlecoGereco I feel like most of the time when someone asks "did you read x", they usually mean "do you understand enough about x that we can talk about it." In that case listening to an audio version is likely good enough, unless they specifically wanted to talk about font or something lol

@AlecoGereco I think I tweeted this exact thing last year, I say yes!
