I wish reviewers of entertainment were more focused on whether the consumer would enjoy the thing rather than their opinion on what is or isn’t good writing/acting/design/etc.

Subtweeting all the lord of the rings show reviews. I just don’t really care whether a reviewer with credentials invisible to me thinks the writing was good or not. Was it cool or was it not?!?

@IksarHS This is a bad take imo. A review should be more than just a thumbs up/thumbs down on "is thing good" because frankly that's an impossible question for anybody to answer for all people. A review should be personal and reflective of that person's experience with the thing

@SamGronhovd I think I actually agree with you! I would love a reviewers personal take on why they did or didn’t enjoy a piece of entertainment.

@SamGronhovd What I am less enthused by is an opinion on what defines good writing or acting or design or whatever. The same way I’m not looking for a critique on how the food was prepared when I read a restaurant review.

@SamGronhovd Fwiw tho, it is just my opinion. I like to read reviews so I can try and understand if I should engage with the thing. I respect that some people might read reviews to discuss their opinions on the craft of that medium.

@IksarHS This honestly confuses me, and I'm really trying to understand, but how can a review say that it enjoys the writing without a definition of what is good (read: enjoyable to the reviewer). I guess a bad review would define that in the review itself, but it must exist, right?

@IksarHS Like yes there isn't ONE definition for good anything, but in order to say if something is good or bad those terms have to be defined, right?

@SamGronhovd An example is you can write a yelp review of a restaurant without telling me how you think about cooking.

@SamGronhovd My honest thought is that reviewers seem less concerned with discussing the reviewed thing and more concerned with appearing to be knowledgeable and say smart things about the craft itself.

@IksarHS I'm not sure focusing on the "consumer" is the solution to the problem with a lot of reviews, but I do agree that a lot of reviews seem written by people who seem to be clearly uninterested (and even repulsed) by the idea of the show itself.

@musicalcolin I think I must have done a bad job with the words, but I don't actually mind if a reviewer hates or loves a thing. I just wish they talked about the thing and not so much about the craft itself.

@IksarHS It's been 18 years since I read this review, but it was the first thing I thought of reading this. https://t.co/esEHdSZqJ3

@Michael40927175 ha, I think I would actually be fine with this, too it's not actually the 'if the consumer would enjoy' part as much as it's a disdain for the 'let me use this as an opportunity to discuss what I think of the craft of writing movies'

@Michael40927175 and even that, people should be able to discuss what they think of the craft of XYZ thing.... even if they have no background in it whatsoever! the thing that bothers me is when I want to to go somewhere to see 'will I like this thing or won't I' reviews aren't that seems like
